Dentist suggests root canal but not sure...

I have been researching information on reasons to get a root canal:
*  Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure
    * Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed)
    * Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth
    * Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums
    * A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
All of which I have no signs of. The reason I am so concerned is because the dentist wants to perform a root canal on one of my front teeth. He doesn't seem to know whether or not a root canal is necessary, but he keeps saying that he "wants to get in there and see if he has to do a root canal" but four different x-rays couldn't really tell him (even a zoomed in x-ray of this tooth).
I cannot afford a root canal.
But I also cannot afford to loose a front tooth either. Do you think I should get a second opinion? Because it seems like he is trying to play more of a money game with me rather than figuring out what is wrong.
Also, has anyone heard of direct root capping...Aparently it is a procedure that has been around forever, but now there are advances in the materials used.

in the USA it is at least $200 for a post and at least about $500-600 for a crown.

How expensive is a RCT in your country?
I assume you are from USA.
In Romania the cost is $20.
Another $50 for Post and crown.

I'm curious, what symptoms DO you have that has prompted this dentist to even consider a root canal?  You've listed all the symptoms you DON'T have.  So, what has even brought a possible root canal into the equation?

Root capping means pulp capping a I assume. It is done when there is a near exposure or very small exposure and the tooth is vital (healthy nerve). If you have deep decay, it is possible that the nerve will be exposed in cleaning out that decay. The dentist should be able to show you on a film the deep decay and it's proximity to the nerve,. If the nerve is exposed, root canal should be initiated. It is quite and easy procedure on a front tooth, but yes it is expensive, and the tooth will also need a post and crown in most cases, especially if the decay is extensive. If the nerve is not exposed, a "pulp cap" can be done-- it may or may not work.

If you are not confident with your dentist, you should get another opinion.;
