Tooth No. 19 is the source of occasional pain ranging from dull ache to acute temperature sensitivity. Tooth can be used for chewing room temperature to warm food without pain. Cannot chew hot food. 4 years ago tooth had constant pain. Tooth was crowned to address suspect fracture. Pain persisted and root canal was performed 3 years ago. Tooth was OK for 2 years but has developed increasing sensitivity over past year. There is some gum recession and root exposure local to this tooth. X-rays appear normal and do not identify root abcess.
Why, how can a tooth that has had a root canal still hurt? What are treatment options?
