What is the best way to fully check a dentist's background without actually asking the dentist? twice now I've been to dentists who've given me patient referrals only to find out the work of their practice was highly questionable and shoddy. (not from the referrals, of course)

Contact your state dental board, and they should be able to give you the information.
I check BBB for good rating and I had a root canal done today and I asked the dentist directly how many root canal she's done. She answered to many she can't count. I had a root canal done by an experienced and honest dentist. But the root canal he did for me did not last five years with a crown. The tooth was extracted after 5 years.
