There are a couple of issues here which I believe is causing my dentist to ignore the real issue. I've always had issues with clenching but it has never caused me jaw pain. But I know that it's damaging my teeth so after years of prodding, I finally caved and had my dentist sell me a night guard. At the same time I went in for a filling on the top left side of my mouth. A week after my filling, I was having pain in the top left side of my mouth. That was the week I went in to get fitted for the night guard. I told my dentist about the pain and he said it was normal to feel pain a week after a filling. A week later, still having pain. That's when I realized that the filling was too high and I went in for an adjustment. They made the adjustment but then I developed pain in my left jaw. So I went in for another adjustment. Now the pain in the top left side of my mouth (side of the filling) is gone but I still have continuous pain in my jaw. I've received my night guard and the dentist says that the guard will solve my jaw pain.
It's been a few days and I'm still having jaw pain. I wake up with pain and I have to take advil or tylenol several times a day. I also have sensitivity to cold. I don't think the guard will help as I didn't have any jaw pain prior to the filling. Is it possible that going 2 weeks with a high filling caused me to develop a problem with my bite? It's been adjusted as much as they can get it. When they had me bite down on the articulation paper, they mentioned that I was coming down hard on the back teeth (my filling was in the front).
I think the fact that I clench is obscuring the real issue as I didn't have any problems with pain prior to the filling.
