cutting down Zoloft

Hi
I am 38 . a few months ago I had emotional problem and felt depressed and anxious . I went to a psychiatrist and was prescribed to take " zoloft " (one per day ) and "Alprazol" (half a day) . I was feeling much better soon . I don't like to get used to this kind of medicins so I frequently asked my Dr to cut it down . after about 3 months I stopped taking Alprazol gradually and under my psychiatrist , but she believes I still have to continue Zoloft . it is about 4 months that I am taking Zoloft and since 10 days ago I started cutting down it to 3/4 by my self . I'd like to give it up little by little , but the problem is that I recently feel disappointed and depressed again. I am wondering if it is for reducing the medicine or my problem and discussion with my friend !!!!
Now I am worried if my disease comes back and I don't like to get depended to this kind of medicins .
Could you please advice me if I should cutting down it to half and then to 1/4 or still continue it or repalce by another medicine like " Flouxitine " . which one has less side effects ?
I appreciate your help in advance !

Hi
We are all addicted to these drugs after 2 months they are not easy to come off so we have to fool the brain because it does not like sudden changes. These tablets alter our brain chemistry ok so don't be disheartened and don't think you are going backwards. These drugs when we come off then especially too quickly as you have cause anxiety/depression due to an overload of adrennaline which has been switched off whilst on the tablets and effects us badly when we withdraw.
The usual withdrawal plan with my support group CITA is to drop 25 mg's on one day of the week and on the other days have your normal dose. Stay like this for a few weeks till you feel stable eg 3 or longer theres no race !! Do it the same day every week !
Then when you feel ok to go on reduce on 2 days by 25 mg's spread the days out eg a Monday and a Saturday and the other days you have the same dose, do you get the picture ?
It doesn't matter how long it takes it's the quality of life whilst doing it, we need to beable to function. Don't get me wrong we will suffer abit, your brain has been switched off and the withdrawals are your brain trying to repair itself. These tablets have worse withdrawals than drink or drugs as they effect the system, they stay in your body for ages they are fat soluable and they have damaged our bodies and how to deal with stress. It is like we have to re-learn that art and we are more sensitized to stress. I liken it to being hit with a baseball bat I came off 150 mg's of effexor after 9 years. I am currently on dolsulipin and plan to wean off very slowly soon.
Take care and let me know how your doing.

If i was you, i would stay on the dose of original zoloft, with anti-depressants i was told that you should stay on them even after you feel better for the length on time you were depressed to help prevent relapse. I am not 100% that is true but it is what my doctor told me meany years ago. you have to give the medication time to work. I would talk to your doctor about why she thinks you should stay on it. switching is a possibility if you are having bad side effects from the zoloft.
