weight loss ?

My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it. I made a 2 month food diary for her, and she said if she would put anyone on what I ate they would loose weight, so what is the problem< LEXAPRO I say. I see my doc in 3 weeks and I am going to be very up front with her and demand that she do something, but then I am afraid of going off the lexapro for fear of the depression and panic attacks coming back. Has anyone had any success with anything for loosing weight while on lexapro???????? This is a real problem for me since I have always been able to loose weight also with some exercise, any info or if anyone wants to share or vent with me, feel free,  thanks

My Dr says the same thing but ater 18months on the drug i've gained 10kg (sorry not sure what that is in pounds) and I am in my 20's where I shouldn't have unexpected weight gain.  I went on an extreme exercise routine while maintaining my healthy food intake, doing bootcamp twice a week and gym classes/running 3 or 4 times a week for 6 weeks and only managed to lose 2kg which went strait back on in 2 weeks after stopping bootcamp!  In the real world I would have lost double that at least and not put it back on so fast.  I have tried tablets to increase metabolism and also xenical but NOTHING works.  Lexapro is evil!  But if you look at results from clinical trials 8% had unexpected weight gain which the company tried to say was similar to the placebo group, but i'm in research and do statistics and I find that hard to believe. My therapist is also in agreeance that lexapro can cause weight gain based on her view of the clinical results.  I have decided to come off the drug, i'm having hypnotherapy to treat the anxiety/depression and taking natural meds such as SamE for mood and chromium for emotional eating.  Unfortunately i'm having withdrawals so haven't reaped any benefits EXCEPT almost a 1kg loss in the past 8 days since stopping the drug!

I have been on ads for 20 years now and have added 20 pounds (thats one per
year!) and no matter what I do, I cant seem to get it off.  My appetite is through
the roof even though I exercise regularly.  My pdoc gave me topomax at one\
point to help as an appetite suppresant and it did help.

best wishes,

I have had a similar issue with Paxil for years, and it's extremely frustrating. I gained 30 lbs when I first started that drug and haven't been able to take it off.  I will lose a few lbs. with great effort, but it always comes back. I have been hesitant to get off Paxil because it works so well for my insomnia (which was the result of depression and anxiety). My doctor tells me the same thing - it's not the Paxil. I think that's **** as well. I never had a weight problem before I started this drug. I finally made an appointment with a psychiatrist to help me find a drug or drug combination that will address this issue. I would advise you to find a doctor who specializes in treating depression - ask around for a good shrink. General practicioners just don't have enough knowledge about this stuff. I'll let you know what happens - my appt. is at the end of March.
