Random swelling/itchy bumps on hands, feet, elbows and knees

For a few weeks now I have been getting random flare ups of what look like bug bites that start to burn, itch and make my fingers, knuckles and toes swell up. At first I thought it was flea bites but did not see any fleas and then it started periodically happening at random in the same areas each time. It will start with an itchy burning feeling on my hand or elbow then all of the sudden I notice it spreads then bumps pop up all over my hands, feet or elbows and grow/swell more as time passes. Eventually it returns back to normal until my next "bite" episode. They sort of look like mosquitos bites or flea bites. I have pics if we can post that on here?. It itches pretty intensely and burns. any ideas? I've never had any allergies before and haven't seen any bugs around (and I've really been paying close attention now that this has happened!)
