What are these white splotches?

My little girl is 5, and she has white splotches all over her legs.  They seem to itch a little bit, but not too badly.  They vary in size from the size of a dime to a quarter.  Moisturizer is uncomfortable.

Hi

White discolorations of the skin may be a case of fungal infection termed tinea versicolor. The affected skin may be lighter in color than normal skin. Looking closely, one may observe mild scaling in the area. The yeast infection may render the area itchy from time to time.

Other differentials may be vitiligo or postinflammatory hypopigmentation wherein insect bites or scratching the area may lead to discolorations. Vitiligo present as symmetrical stark white patches of skin. At this point, I do not think this is vitiligo. Have this assessed by a dermatologist early on so that the right management be given. A diagnosis of fungal infection needs to be ascertained objectively.
