red spots all over legs

Hi,

When I am at physical therapy my knees turn extremely red and blotchy red spots and if you push on them it turns white. If you place your hand on them they are burning hot. My PT thought it was because I was working out, but this occurs at randoms times as well. Even if I'm just sitting down or laying down they just become red.

Also when I get out of the shower my whole entire leg has these red blotchy spots all over them from my toes to my hips. At first they weren't itchy but now when i get out of the shower they are itchy. Someone mentioned that it may be a heat allergy.. but I haven't seen a doctor for this yet.

Any ideas what this may be?

attached is a photo of the red spots around my knee. those scars are from ACL reconstruction and a lateral release.

Hi,

Yes it would be advisable not to use any cosmetic products  at the site of lesions.

You could consult a skin specialist if your symptoms do not resolve with the above methods.

Post us if you need any further information.

thankyou so much! I will have to try these. Is there anyone I should consult? I went to my doctor about it, and she just said that it might be my bodies way of "cooling down". I didn't think that could be right, since it has just started in the past 2-3 years. Should I see a dermatologist? And when i shower, i shouldn't use any shower gel directly on my legs?

Hi,

This could be eczema, dermatitis, allergic reaction etc. You need to wash the areas several times with fresh water. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites.

Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions and see if it helps. You could take some oral antihistamine medications like cetrizine or loratadine. You need to maintain a good personal hygiene .

Anti-itch drugs, often antihistamine, may reduce the itch during a flare up of eczema, and the reduced scratching in turn reduces damage and irritation to the skin.

For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone or desonide), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide).

Eczema can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Moisturizing is one of the most important self-care treatments for sufferers of eczema. Keeping the affected area moistened can promote skin healing and relief of symptoms.

Post us if you need any further information.

Regards

I hear ya! This happens to me all the time! Daily, even. When I wear wool boots with jeans, and my legs get hot, I get these red hot splotches everywhere on them! its weird, looks kind of like little red continents all over my legs! They never hurt, but they sometimes get itchy, usually in the shower. I can get them mildly on my arms, all over my legs, my bum, it just is everywhere! Whenever I am in contact with heat or when i become overheated, like working out, lying on the beach, showering, wearing warm tight clothing, or just sitting in the sun for a while. It really is a nuisance, seeing as I want to lie on the beach like everyone, but I'm embarassed :( My attempt was to become very tan on my next holiday, in hope that the splotches wouldnt be noticable. I need help too!
