Why does glucose go up when you're sick?

I have type 2 and take insulin.  I recently had a battle with food poisoning and my glucose went way up(as high as 250) and I was passing ketones, something I haven't done since starting insulin three years ago.  When I peed in a cup to test for ketones it smelled like honey.  I wasn't eating much at all and what I ate didn't stay down, so -- why the high sugars?

When you are sick your body is under stress and it is quite common to have increased blood sugar / increased need for insulin.

Passing ketones is likely a combination of not eating (thus your body is losing/ burning fat), and the high blood sugar / being ill.

If you are passing high level of ketones (low level is not a worry, particularly if it is after a period of fasting / not eating), and you can't get your blood sugar down, you should go to emergency care to get checked as there is a risk of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Hope you are already better.
