In addition, I took Glucophage [Metformin] for 8 years. I used several different generic brands, none had an odor. I checked one made by Aurobindo Pharma, USA. The tablets outer has a coating, no smell. I split it open, it does not have an odor of any sorts.
I do suggest you consult with your pharmacist. IMO, I wouldn't swallow anything that had a moldy odor unless several Pharmacist said it was OK to do so. Have him/her examine what you have on hand.
Thanks for the quick response osakarose - most appreciated! I buy my prescription Glucophage (not the generic) here in Belgium the prescription and the notice doesn't mention the factthat it can smell and taste moldy. I'm a very avid reader of prescription leaflets as I have to be careful due to the fact that I take a few medications other than Glucophage. I will of course continue to take it and swallow it down very quickly. Regards. Rosymoggs.
Unfortunately, this is normal for Glucophage or any of the generic brands of this drug. It is listed on the prescription info that comes with the pills. It states that it will have a strong moldy smell and taste. Just hold your nose and take it anyway!
It may be the generic brand you have on hand. A side effect reported is it leaves a metallic taste. Unsure about the moldy taste. Also reported that certain generic brands of Metformin smell like fish, tires, and old smelly sweat socks. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see what other brands they have. Good luck -
