It runs in my family

Hi there,
My name is Hayley and I am 18 years old.  Over the last four weeks or so I have noticed unexplainable bruises on my shins.  Diabetes runs in my family and I was wondering if maybe this illness could be the reason for my bruises.  I have also noticed a red splotchy rash that is on my thighs and it does not itch so I have ruled out hives (which I have gotten before).  I am getting very worried about this strange accourance and hope that it is nothing serious.  Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Dr. Anita R.
I had a question about treating diabetes type II along with treating allergy related excema. I have tested my husband Paul in the past few weeks for a fasting blood sugar and he registered as having a pre-diabetic sugar level. I now know he is now currently a diabetic. He weighs 280/285 lbs and has recently had several diabetic symptoms. If he does not eat he gets headaches, moody, and recently (today) at work he saw a kalediscope circle in his face that followed him wherever he eyes turned. At the opposite end of the spectrum, even one bowl of cereal is too much and gets very lethargic. Paul also has allergies and has a recent flare up of excema (he is allergic specifically to milk, wood, dust and he works in a lumber yard so avoiding wood is not an option right now). We know what he has, but the question is How to treat both problems without drug interaction being negative. Please help any info would be appreciated. (I would have posted new topic but did not see any way to do so.)

Thank you,
Amy M.

Hello Hayley:

Are you sure those are bruises on your shins?  I'd be curious of the colour of the
"bruises" and is the rash on your thigh similar?  Are they getting bigger?  Are they somewhat oval or round shape?  Are any of them a light, medium or dark redish/brownish colour?  Or yellow?  Are any of these spots shiny on the surface?
Is the edging of these "bruises/rash" a darker red colour?  They do not hurt or itch?

If you said yes to most of these questions then you may have NLD(Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum.  Both Diabetics and non-diabetics can get these plagues.  Supposedly, sugar control is not the cause of them.  If you think you have this condition then see your Dr.  He/she can give you a topical cream(most likely steroidal) to put on it.  This
sometimes helps them to heal.  Having your sugars under control will be helpful.  I think UV lights are also used as a treatment.  Someone also mentioned possible skin grafts.Ask your Dr. for different options.

They can grow bigger and get worse looking.  Please protect them from getting hit/hurt since that will result in ulcers on them.  Then the Dr. will have to give you another type of cream and a wrap to help heal the ulcers.  They hurt like HELL.OO if they get hit.  I hope
that you do not have NLD.  They will get as I have described them in my questions if they do not heal first.Good Luck.

Easy bruising and splotchy rashes aren't common symptoms of Diabetes.

Easy bruising is concerning for possible low platelets or other bleeding/coagulation problems

Splotchy rashes on thighs is most commonly tinea corporis, body fungus, like athlete's foot, but you need a doctor to look at it to see if it is.

Dear Friends,

I have very much enjoyed my time on Medhelp and have learned from you even while hosting our Ask-A-Doctor forum for Diabetes. Sadly I am leaving the Medhelp community as my own practice has become busier and time constraints have proved quite challenging. So from April 7th 2008 I will be officially away from Medhelp, but you can still find me at our practice website www.endocrinehelp.com, so please drop me a  line if you wish. Most likely a new physician will be hosting the Diabetes forum for Medhelp in the future, so please continue to check in with the Medhelp community.
All the best to you and blessings for the future,

Sincerely,
Anita Ramsetty,MD
