Gosh glad you found out what it was.Wonder why the vet could not tell you what kind of poison it was yet know he had been poisend.I suppose it was nearly out of his system anyway at least he is still with you thank goodness.
Now you can look for jealousy from Duke poor baby! he is outside and Sam inside.
Give him a message from me to scream and shout I wanna come in too !!! lol.
Anyway so relieved you found the cause.I hope Duke and Sam become great friends.
Nah, they couldn't :(
Like I said before, we live in a more rural area and literally right next to a giant feild, so I totally understand your worries with Misty.
And my dog is exactly the same way! lol He's kinda like a baby -- if he can fit it into his mouth, then to him, that's where it belongs!
And he does always catch mice and bats and moles, so I think that just might be possible D:
It could have been a spider or a snake too, but we didn't see any bites on him, so the mouse makes much more sense to me.
Goodness me, someday these animals are gonna give me a heart attack! lol
Thank you :)
Poisoned? Oh my goodness! And they couldn't tell what sort of poison it was?
I wonder if he might have eaten a bit of a poisoned mouse or something? That always worries me with Misty. She is such a greedy pig, she will wolf anything down, and sometimes catches field mice. In the middle of nowhere, the worst could happen to her from that is getting worms. But near farm buildings or houses, then I worry. She did this the other day (Saturday) She had lagged behind just a little bit when we were in a field. After a minute or two I looked back to see where she had got to, and she was eating something! Well I told her DROP! but she wouldn't, and ate it.
She was just fine, but it's still a worry. We walk with her free in the fields, not on a leash. I can't leash her in a field, as she likes to run about.
Maybe your dog caught some little critter that had been poisoned.
I hope he is feeling much better soon.
You both are so very right :3
Having so many animals (18 of 'em), it's so, so hard to distribute attention equally, espically because Sam is an inside dog and Duke is an outside dog.
But I always try hard to make sure everyone gets attention, but I'll try harder :)
As for an update: The vet finally opened today and we took Duke in and apperently he was poisoned.
No one knows by what, but he's know on antibiotics and he should start feeling better in about 3 days.
Seanna's got a point. We have a dog visits us from a nearby farm. He's a great lad, very friendly with me and my dog. He never oversteps any boundaries (he's so dirty I cannot let him in the house, so he lays outside with his head on the step watching me and wagging his tail if I'm in the kitchen)
Anyway although I am always kind to him, I involve both of them in games etc, and occasionally give them both a small treat. But I always treat my dog first...then him. I show them affection, and again, stroke her first, then him. He accepts this happily, and I can tell my girl kind of needs that so the "Pack order" stays on equilibrium. A friend once came and did it the other way round, and you should have seen Misty's face! She looked quite disturbed about this change of order! I could tell immediately it caused her slight anxiety.
Hmm Strange Duke starting to lick Sams face that is a sign of submission on Dukes part.
Is Sam the one that you found half starved ?.If so... of course you would have been paying him a lot of attention and he thinks that he is not the dominant one anymore and he is Very upset...... one thing is that you are worrying about him now .Maybe just maybe if he carries on like this he has got your complete attention is it anything like Sam was acting.at all ???
What ever happens if he is sick or not ! you must not upset the balance of the pack,as Duke is feeling very threatened so make sure he gets fed first patted first just make him know that he is still the boss that way there should be no jealousy.
He cannot help how he is and he feels you are undermining him in front of Sam I would say he is a very proud and intelligent Dog so life as he knows it is coming to an end.
Take him outside and stand with him, make him feel important he must believe he is still top dog.
One thing I never do is underestimate our wonderful dogs they are so smart. The interaction between my pack well lol its odd to say the least.Shane my Golden is top dog but is so gentle , kind but a bit aloof.... joining in the fun with the Clumbers IS a bit beneath him as he is convinced that he is human not a dog at all ,but he can be fast asleep and they could lie all over him and not a word from him ever because they adore him and he knows it.
You can never change the pecking order it has to be done between themselves Duke is so mixed up and to get your love back (so he thinks) is to become Sam.
Only my theory ....sorry all over the place I write as I think some times. If Duke is sick or not just tell him you love him a lot.I know I sound silly and have had many dogs over many yrs but this pack of mine takes the cake and nothing any dog can do would surprise me anymore.
Very often with a dog, shaking and trembling is a sign of pain. Now obviously I can't tell you where he feels that pain. Also a dog often won't eat if it has pain.
I wonder if it could possibly be his joints? Playing or 'play-fighting' with a younger dog may have made any problem like that worse.
But I can't really say. It could be abdominal, as his breathing is weird...
I think, under the circumstances, all you can do is wait for Monday morning.
But I wouldn't hesitate to take him to the emergency vet in the meantime if you get a really bad feeling about things, or if he gets worse in any way.
Sometimes, if you call the vet's number, they give out another emergency number to call out-of-hours (usually a recorded message) You could maybe give that a try?
Hm....I think you might be right D:
I mean, everyone's saying "Oh, he's fine, he's fine", but something just doesn't seem...right, ya know? Can't ignore this gut feeling I have...I wish there was a 24 hour vet where I lived...
Like, his tail is pulled REALLY tightly against his tush...
Is there a chance that a spider could have bitten him? D:
We live in a sort of rural area.
We looked him over everywhere and we can't find any blood (if a snake bit him), or marks, or swelling of any kind...
I just don't know if this is internal (like, if he ate something he shouldn't have) or something psycial (like, if he got hurt).
lol You can clearly tell I'm just freakin' a bit...I want him to just be okay. I wish animals could talk XD It would make like so much eaiser.
But if he isn't getting any better, Monday, he's going to the vet! I've already made up my mind on that.
This just doesn't seem like jealous behavior...
But the fact that you think he's getting along with Sam better really gives me a more positive out-look on that bit with them and gives me more hope that they'll become friends.
Thank you so much for your help and kind words :)
I can't be certain. All I can say is if any dog suddenly *doesn't want to go out anymore...*doesn't want to eat (when previosly had a good appetite) ...and *is showing signs of seriously laboured breathing...then there is likely to be something physically wrong there.
These new symptoms could well be co-incidental. From what you said, it sounds like he has started to form a pretty positive doggy-bond with Sam anyway. This behaviour could be because he isn't feeling well, not anything to do with the other dog.
