Hi Margot...My holistic Vet is who recommends Rescue Remedy for many things....He's also the same Vet that talked me into the thundershirts...But on the other hand, also the same Vet that writes me the script after he realized that trauma the dogs were enduring during a storm...Thus, the whole thing was a process over a period of time.....Karla
Glad the Tescue Remedy works for you. Have heard pros and cons.
She might want to check on getting some Acepromazine.
I agree with everyone else, but I also understand your problem.....I have two thunderstorm phobic dogs.....My fear is one is going to have a Heart Attack because they are so frightened!! After trying many things first, I have had to resort to my Vet writing a prescription for a sedative......
The trick though is that I have to know when a storm is coming because the medication has to be given 1 hour before the event......Also, I only give HALF the recommended dose & they both wear a thundershirts!!!!
I do have VERY good luck with a product called "Rescue Remedy" if the storms are mild or short.....You can purchase this at most healthfood stores or online......I know that Whole foods sells it if you have assess to one of those.....It's made for humans & animals...I really does work!!!! Yes, I use it also......Karla
I would wholeheartedly agree with all the above posts. Never give your dog any medication, particularly human medication, without approval from your vet. There are many reasons for this, not least the strengths of human medication is much too strong for dogs - but also, and this is really important, the biology and physiology of dogs is completely different to humans, which means many human medications can be fatal for dogs. Please don't give your dog human medication unless your vet approves of it and you know the proper dosage. I would suggest giving her benadryl (1 mg per lb of body weight) or trying a thunder shirt. Your vet can give you a sedative that you can try if you know about a thunderstorm beforehand.
Gracious! First of all, never give an animal any medication that is not prescribed by your vet. Some human medicines can make animals very sick or even kill them. Go to the vet, please. - Blu
That is a pretty strong medication. I am not qualified to answer this but I would not. I suggest you call your Vet fir a proper medication and dose.
Maybe try a thunder shirt.
