I had no idea that a service dog was defined by the 3 actions, that is a very cool fact to know. Thanks, great information.

with your dogs, you may not be auto covered by the ada until their fully trained, and so you dont have public access rights, you can ask to be let into a store etc and its up to the owners when you tell them why. Since blue alerts me to seizures b4 they happen hes considered active even tho hes being trained.

brigadoon dogs the one in bellingham wa. for service dog waiting list of 2 to 4yrs.
Thanks for always encouraging me. at one point-it was very hard to keep hope that Both I and the ex who was trying to ruin him, hadnt somehow ruined Blue for service work because he wasnt perfect all the sudden any more.
so, life and health kicked my butt again. but hope to have those links up for everyone soon.
an update on my dog, Hes gone in for 2 weeks pro training. seems his issues are fear based, and his 'fear stage'. trainer says hes been a dream to work with. So seems I havent done to bad of a job, and the issues she says are extremely easy to fix and should be quickly solved with a little planned exposure.
and at the end of 2 weeks, 1 week now, he will be ready to have and pass his good citizens test.
And when the time comes that she knows of a woman that will do the public access cert for 100 bucks!
She thinks he may have a vision issue in one of his eyes tho. But says he will make an awesome service dog.
She says Washington States considering the bill many have passed, that even a home trained service dog must be certified by some organization. Obviously Price is the BIG Issue for most of us with that bill.
When I find out if the ladys willing to do others dogs I will post about it. Seems others would love the opportunity Ive stumbled on to.
Its good to hear from a pro, that all the negative feed back I got in another place is a bunch of crap. And I dont have to just toss my dog and start over. I dont know how people can just go through dog after dog if one displays a trait that can be solved if they knew what they were doing... I couldnt emotionally handle that. Hoping for the perfect dog to drop in my lap rather then making the perfect dog.... It seems some people just dont want to do the work and would rather be lazy to me now.
I got in over my head with my dog tho, not knowing how much things have changed for 1, and then being ill prepared in the face of my disability... Id definitely recommend people look into a trainer First. Books, friends for help, cuz so much of their training needs another person involved. And organizations and Puppy Raiser Classes or being one First. Youd learn a world of wealth and have so many to help. Youd have to give the pup up, but then youd have the tools to train your own before ending up as I did.
And part of the problem Im told IS that hes Not Stupid. The Smarter the dog the more problems your gonna have because Challenging them becomes very difficult.
Angel, don't beat yourself up over your dog's issues. You're moving forward and that's the important thing here. Yes, it's a great deal of work to raise a puppy, and even more to raise a service dog. You're doing everything right by dealing with the problem. So many times people in this same situation only say, "I can't" and that's the end of it. You, on the other hand, are saying not only "I can" but "I will."
Trying thinking more like a dog. LOL! Seriously, dogs live in the moment. They don't hold grudges; they don't worry about what happened in the past; they don't worry about the future. Mistakes and problems are opportunities for learning on both sides. Teaching moments NEVER stop as long as you share your life with a dog. There never comes a time when you can say, "My dog's training is complete and my job is done." It simply doesn't work that way which is why there are so many failures between humans and their dogs. The more you communicate with your dog using rules, boundaries and limitations (i.e., discipline) the closer your relationship will be.
A word on discipline: Many people mistakenly believe discipline means punishment, sometimes to the extent of violence. That interpretation is very wrong. Think of it more as communicating pack rules to your dog in a positive way the same way you would teach and communicate with a human toddler. Some people need formal parenting classes to deal with young children; most of us need professional assistance to teach our dogs to behave well.
I applaud you for recognizing the behavior you don't want to see in your dog and for actually doing something about it. It's a rare thing for a person to (1) admit being in over her head and (2) act appropriately on that epiphany. You have absolutely nothing over which to feel guilty or ashamed. Stay positive and keep moving forward toward success! :-)
I guess a draw back to raising a puppy is that it can still go wrong, and you get so much more involved with a pup then you do an adult. These days raising a puppy, is Nothing like it once was. You have to do So much research now. Its a Huge and Vast undertaking.
So look them up and Really research, so you dont make my mistakes by accident as well. Maybe, find a puppy raiser group to go and watch their training sessions. If Id of known more when I got Blue Id of done just that.
Found a trainer in yakima wa. who will take blue and see what she thinks and can do. for now hes stuck home while I figure out his new found aggression issues, but not totally discounting him yet.
Im going to recommend a community, I think its full of Extensive material of Great Use. Help prevent any mistakes to those looking to raise their own SD, So check em out.

Books Ive already gotten:
Working like dogs. service dog guide book. I found it vague personally and incomplete.
Puppy Raising the guide dogs way. Also vague and not all that useful.
A Dog Whos Always Welcome. I liked it, but cant remember why lol.

I may not post links for a day or 2, im having a very bad day. Most feed back about my dog isnt good with the situation to aggression beginning etc, thanx so very much to my ex best friend in the world.
todays a seizure day tho, and particularly rough....Im physically and emotionally shot.
It used to be that the only person I Hated was the drunk that took away my life, now its the ex as well, for ruining my dog and taking away in that my confidence, my hope, my chance at normalcy, and replacing it with the fear once again, the sadness, and the expiration date.
hopefully a trainer can fix these things- but i think its best to try to keep detaching at this point.
I feel like someone just took my life away again....
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this information on service dogs. Where I live, they must be licensed and wear an identification vest, and I understand statutes, regulations and local ordinances differ depending on location.
The AKC Canine Good Citizen class is one that every dog owner should attend. Most schools require that the dog first complete a basic obedience class first. While the AKC is geared toward purebred dogs, the Canine Good Citizen certification is open to any dog including mutts. The idea behind it is mostly socializing your dog to new people and new situations. It's often a prerequisite for therapy dog certification. The result is that your dog becomes an ambassador for all dogs by demonstrating calm, friendly and non-destructive behavior.
Therapy dogs are the ones who visit hospital patients or anyone who is homebound and might enjoy company. I have a nephew with severe epilepsy and during one of his many lengthy stays at the hospital, and therapy dog group visited. That kid was so happy he about exploded out of his bed, and even two years later he still talks about the event.
I've seen programs on television about prisons who have service dog training programs. The inmates handle all the training and focus on various skills depending on who needs them. The training usually focuses on mobility issues.
I would love for my nephew to have a service dog of his own to help with the drop attacks. That poor kid has bashed himself badly when they happen - even has to wear a helmet just to attend school. Unfortunately, the family is such that it's not a possibility right now. No time for training with two more small boys and mother with more than enough on her plate right now. Hopefully someday it will happen.
Ive been thinking and since you want a dog thats more the Now kinda help, contact some local large breed Rescues. They carefully eval their dogs before rehoming them. Then you dont have to wait... And you wont have to worry about the same issues I do with raising a pup. Gods is it demanding! it was so much Easier, when it was puppies that were pets growing up.
Maybe you can even get your Pyrenees that way, and be able to test its aptitude first? then it has to go and be trained to perfect obedience then to you.
look for a local Kennel Club or 4H group also, they have a wealth of knowledge and usually people will bend over backwards to help you out!
I was brain fried last night when I responded. Sorry. Will do the links tomorrow, no books have arrived Yet. but Ill go over a couple of others and see if they might prove useful for you in any way and either send you the parts that Would be of use or the book names...
probly better if I do both eh? lol
I probly should have gone through a rescue instead, with the problems Im fighting now because of my ex-boyfriends mannerisms with my puppy...Ive an Expensive list of habbits Im going to have to pay for help with now.
BUT, maybe this is how its supposed to be eh? If I want to Be a Trainer to help people like you get what they need without the BS.
I also read some where maybe on this site that Black Labs stay Puppies Longer and always have to be touching you, and Yellow Labs are Calmer more adult layed back observant then in your face. Ive never had labs.
My experience is with GSD's, Anatolian's, Akbash, Great Pyrenees, Border collies, Aussies, Boxers, Pit Bulls, and Mastiff Mixes.
Consider your breed, and then Consider What Instincts you Dont want to Awaken in your pup through play etc.
IE, Like to much chasing a ball for a border collie who then gets obsessive. Thats a good response for a drug dog who is motivated by its obsession, not a disability service dog or pet.
Training is also a way for the dog and You to Bond. Consider that too.
Ill post some more later this week, after skimming the books due to arrive before Saturday...
great perinese dogs, do alot of roaming, and barking, I dont know about a mix-even with a lab, how that could end up working out. Ive seen one person who used a Saint Bernard. He was a judge at a livestock show.
that may be a good choice if its that kind of size you want, but rather then having a roaming and barking instinct, it will be more likely to center on you.
consider your health when you choose a breed, if the dog ends up not being well suited to the job asked of him, guarding, careful socialization needs to happen, I should know- I too live in the middle of no-where, and I think its hurting my dogs training as well.
You must consider what could happen to your dog if something happened to you, he needs to be trained in a manner that makes him adoptable by a wide range of people.
Certain Mastiffs also make very good dogs for service work. I know a lady owns a mastiff rescue...
some, I Dont yet know which, organizations will train you with your dog in your home. But someone else cant take your place if being matched with an already trained dog...They eval you with several dogs to give you your best match.
Where do you live state wise?
if you want a dog that stays home mostly and helps you There, another option is to find an older calm dog who you can teach to help you get up and down. its a slow process, I use my dog for that currently some, he seems inclined to automatically offer him self and Stand Still when he sees im having a bit of trouble...
as soon as I review a bunch of book arriving this week, I will post any if, that are worth your look see.
I will get a bunch of links together and post them here also to internet sites Ive found Highly Useful.
gimmie a day or two for that and a good week to mention the good and worthless books not to bother with or the ones to buy....
I LOVE DOGS ALL DOGS AND I THINK I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A CERTAIN CALLING WITH THEM.I KNOW THEIR SPIRITS GUARD ME.AND I HAVE 4 LITTLE ONES THAT LAY WITH ME DAILY.
ANYWAY I AM PRETTY LAYED BACK BECAUSE THATS ME,ALSO MY HEALTH HAS BEEN BAD.I ALWAYS HURT AND I HAVE A SERIOUS BALANCE PROBLEM.I LIVE ON A SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN SO MY GROWN KIDS WORRY A LOT ABOUT ME.ANYWAY I FALL A LOT,BUT I BOUNCE BACK SORT OF .LOL

BUT I WANT ONE THAT I CAN TRAIN BUT WITH MY LIMITATIONS I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO.MY DAUGHTER SAID SHE COULD GO TO TRAINING SESSIONS FOR ME AND BRING HER BACK TO ME.WHAT BREED WOULD YOU SUGGEST ALSO WHAT TRAINING CAN I LEARN AND FOLLOW? THANKS SO MUCH.I WAS THINKING MAYBE A LABERNESE?LEANING TOWARDS BLACK LAB ALSO.MADDY
I responded to a posting asking questions and someone subsequently wrote me and asked If I would post this response as a stand alone post.
If I Can Make a Difference In One persons Life, then my own Has meaning.
Balancing Life, Lessons from a Service Dog.
Service Dogs Aren't Pets-they ARE Our Chance to Live again. Take them away, and leave us with an Expiration Date, a Death Sentence. Take away a Pet, and its sadness thats replaced. A pets loss Dosen't Alter or Stop your Life.
That is the Difference Between the 2.
Who'd a thought my service dog would be the one to Show and Teach me how to Balance life? And make me Realize Im lucky in many respects.
In getting him, Ive learned When to put up with What, and for How long, and What things to just tell people to take a hike with, that will do me more damage then good in the long run.
About Love, and what Isn't love in others.
I'm learning which priorities not to break with.
Ive been down alot of late, learning these lessons, and telling a loved one to get out of my life. I'm more important than certain things, people, or feelings. The essence of the word Deserve.
Love Doesn't equate to Damaging a persons Successes. What ever your own issues may be. as my friend has done to me.
Believing in My Self, and Trusting My Self, Something my ex-husband did a good job of destroying.
How to Set boundaries, and Enforce good behaviors, not just with the dog, but with people also. The WHENS to do things-so, timing.
Tactfulness- positive ways to the out comes I want.
Being Assertive.
Multi-tasking again.
That asking for helps not Always a sign of weakness. And When to do so.
Reasons to See Worth in my Self again.
A Future.
All Because of my Service Dog.
And all I was Looking For was a way to Deal with my Seizures...
If Your Looking for a Reason in Life, Try Becoming a Puppy Raiser. Im Training my own dog, but these lessons? I wouldnt have expected to learn them from my dog.
Hes been helping me change things about my self and my views, I didnt realize. Im reaching hold of those things Ive Wanted to Be, but always seemed out of reach since my injuries.
Always Questions, How How BUT HOW?! Everyone had input, but no one had A Book of Answers to life. and they Wont.
Maybe this will be an answer for someone else as well...
