Life for Red

I have taken a dog from my neighbors, literally at the time they were going to shoot him because he had gone blind. They are hunters and he was no good to them any more.. They called me that crazy lady.Wasn't the first time won't be the last.I live on social security and have very little money. It is a little hard but,I just couldn't stand there. Does anybody out there know about blind dogs? I really need help of any kind. RED is a good dog and deserves the right to live.. Thankyou for reading this Question.

I agree with you sandy. It does take that speacial someone to love an  animal. I think that you was chossen to recuse Red. It takes some one really speacial to rescuce a dog in need. It is funny how you are there when an animal needs you . With Scruff when we found him. I dont know what made us into the part of the town where i found him.We dont useually go into that end, but on that day some thing made me go . I said to my oh we are going to the other end of town. When he asked why I said I dont know but I know we have to. That is went found Scruff . My oh then said I now know why you wanted to come here. When We had took the chain of him and picked him up Scruff was so scared but he still licked us all over. I think from that day he knew that now got a mum and dad who really loved him and that he was save. Give Red a big hug and kiss from another rescuer. Yes I would do the same again. if I found another animal that needs me .love and hugs Alicia

Hi Sandy. What a lovely lady you are for taking (saving) Red. Some people are so cruel - but people like you balance things out. I just find it so hard to believe that anyone could be so heartless as to shoot a dog, just because it has gone blind. I have had a blind dog in the past - a rescued lurcher called Meg, who lived until she was the ripe old age of 20, and thoroughly enjoyed her long life. There were certain things we had to be aware of, such as not leaving things in her way, particularly near the stairs, and we tried to keep all our furnishings in the same place, so she knew instinctively where everything was. We couldn't let her off the lead anymore, as she would just wander off and could have easily gone into traffic, water, etc., but instead we used the extending leads so she could roam a little under supervision and control. It was only when she went completely deaf as well as blind that we decided it was 'that time', which was mainly because her quality of life diminished so much. While she had her hearing, she was absolutely fine and seemed to be as adventurous as any sighted dog. Give Red a huge hug from me ... he is so very lucky you were there to save him. Tony

I just posted my first post here under dry eye for dogs.  My little dog is 16lbs and both blind and deaf.  She can see shadows, and that is about it.  She suffers from extreme dry eye.  Thank you for saving Red.  A neighbor down my street has shot and killed every single loose dog in the neighborhood.  I rescued two strays already (I have 4 dogs now including the blind dog with dry eye who I rescued last year)   She has a good sense of the house and where everything is located and relies on her smell sense primarily to get around.  If you go on Pawhealer there is a story of a blind dog who uses a harness round cane to get around.  Thanks again, from another rescuer.

Red is lucky he found you .At least you got to him before anything happened. With Scruff I wish I had got to him sooner. If I had found him sooner he would not have suffered the cruelty  he went though before I found him. If I ever found out the people who was cruel to him I would kill them. I hate cruelty to any animal.

Sandy, it's great you saved Red. You are right, he does have a right to a life, and you have given him that. All the best to you.
I have no experience and not much knowledge at all about how to assist a blind dog. Crystallady gave you some good tips, and I am sure there are others here who will be able to help.

I can maybe be of some help by posting a link for you about financial help and support available for those on low income or benefits.

I hope this might be useful for you:

I think that you deserve a medal for saving this dog. When he gets used to your home dont move anything he will learn to go round things. When you take him for his waklies get one of thosse extending leads. You cant let blind dogs of the leads as they cant see danger. You can train a blind dog by verbal commands. Mum had a blind lab called funny enough Sandy, he was blind from birth. He turned out to be a super dog and very well trained and very loyal. I would have done the same this dog does deserve to live.Once again you have done right in saving this dog. My little yorkie x was saved by me  he was a cruelty case realy beaten up. When we found him he had no fur on him at all. He had girregtte burns all down  the spine. You could every bone in his body. full of fleas, scared of everything. He had cuts bruises on his back end. All his pads on his feet was cut slashed so he could not run away. On top of this we found him in the local town tied to a lamp post with a big chain. He is only the size of a west island terrier. When we found him he was just 9 months old. We called him Scruff which he is the most scruffest dog you have ever seen. It took us 3 years to get him back to heatlh and it took us that long for him to trust people again. He now as the run of house sleeps on my bed.  Sits on your knee and goes to sleep. He goes on the sofa  he can go anytwhere in the house He has cooked fresh meat every day. Tonight he had chicken breast and we take with us every where we go.
