Grilly is right I guess. I didn't think about a scratch being the issue. I was thinking your dog has allergies like mine. Sorry, if I didn't think my answer fully through. But just a water solution shouldn't hurt. No visin though just in case. May God bless you,

When you say your dog's eye is red, do you mean the white part of the eye or the tissues surrounding the eye?
Do you have any idea why the eye might be red? Do you have other pets that could possibly have scratched him while they were playing? Was he walking through bushes that may have scratched him?
Don't put anything in his eye for right now. If this is a minor irritation, it will go away in a day or two. If it doesn't go away in a day or two, he needs to be seen by a vet because it could be something that he needs medication for. DO NOT put anything in his eye without first consulting a vet because certain ingredients in eye medications can make an already bad situation much worse. For instance, if the preparation you put in his eye has a steroid in it, and there is a scratch on the dog's cornea, the eye could actually ulcerate and he could end up losing his sight, if not the eye itself.
Just hang in there for a day or two and see what happens. If it's still red on Friday morning with no signs of improvement, get him to the vet on Friday before the weekend. That way he won't have to go for the whole weekend without treatment. Please let us know how he is.

Dogs can take Baby aspirin when in pain. They can take or to, or pedolite when they have stomach issues. Vets even give dogs insulin when needed. So, I dont believe it would hurt to use visin or other eye wash in their eyes.
Just like with a human though if the redness last for a few days then you need to get your dog checked. I pray this helped. May God Bless You,
Kimberly
