Use the soup ladle, like minpinmom4 does. It makes it easy because the handle is long enough that you don't have to get real close and scare the dog. It works best in the morning when the dog has to go really bad and doesn't care if your following her around. I boil the ladle and an empty pill bottle to store the sample in.
I used a plastic bottle (like Coke or Pepsi) and cut the bottom off at an angle. I then placed it under my dog as she squatted (came in from behind, so not to spook her). Then I just twisted off the cap and poured it into the specimen cup. Good luck! :-)
It's not that hard...Yes, wash your hands afterward if you want.........All mine (4) have urine samples taken at each yearly check up........Karla
Thanks for all your tips, but hmmm... it does require dexterity to do this task! Not to mention the hygiene aspect...How often did you have to collect a urine sample?
I found a collector after searching on the internet, it looks really easy but the price is outrageous!. http://www.olympicveterinary.com/Olympic-Clean-Catch-a/145.htm
I'm surprised there is nothing out there to make it easy for dog owners... It seems that vets do ask for urine sample quite often.
You can collect in about anything that's clean...My Vet hands out paper (French Fry) containers.....The old fashion kind that french fries are served in.....They're narrow so it makes it easy to slide under to catch the pee...
However, you can use just about anything...A soup ladle, tupperware container, cool-whip container, aluminum pie plate, any plastic container, etc.....
I then pour mine up into a baggie & refrigerate until we head to the Vet....
Good luck.....Karla
We had a diabetic small Min Pin so we used a long handle ladle, the kind you scoop soup out with. We went behind her as she squatted and got the specimen. Good luck with this!
If you can't get it the Vet can do it :)
