Yes, many dogs are suffering from allergies - and regrettably, this is often down to low quality processed foods. If you want to read more about this, please take a look at a piece I have recently done on it at http://www.infobarrel.com/Is_Your_Dog_Allergic_To_Its_Food
Did you resolve this problem? My little bull terrier carried this problem for the first nine months of his life. Sometimes, as in this case, it is the immune system that is simply too weak. I put my dog on a more expensive diet and supplemented with a wellness formula from pet-plicity. He is 18 months old now and he has come good.
From your description with the starting on the ears then spreading, it sounds like "Mange" Mites to me, too.....However, there are two kinds of mange and both are medically addressed differently...Please, Visit your Vet for a skin scrape...He/She will be able to determine witch kind they are and begin treatment immediately......The sooner, the better....Mange can cover they whole body & put the dog in serious danger! Easier to treat if started early! Let us know what you find out....Karla
Could be mites, hypothyroidism, possible Cushings.
Best course is a Vet visit to check for mites and some blood work to check thyroid.
Sorry meant to add ... tea tree shampoo used daily is useful in helping fight the infection, but this is secondary to proper veterinary treatment. It is also beneficial to feed your dog with some omega-3 as a supplement to help the immune system fight the bacteria. Treatments vary depending on the severity of the mite infection, but some treatments can be very harsh, and it is recommended that an attempt at homeopathic treatments should be undertaken first. If this fails, then the harsher treatment (usually involving a complete body dip) might be necessary. Tony
Connie is almost certainly right ... this does sound like mites of one kind or another. As it started in his ears, it could also be a yeast infection, so a visit to your local vet is essential to diagnose properly. Can you remember your dog shaking his head alot before the hair loss started on the rest of his body? Mites can often start in the ear (because of all the places dogs tend to put their heads), but the mites could also have been transferred from another dog or from the bedding of another dog with the infestation. How old is he and is he neutered?
Hello ....
It's sounds to me, that it might be mites. If you can, Please attach a photo of your dogs condition. I know that other forum members, as well as myself, would like to see a photo.
I have 4 dogs....all of them were infested with mites, and needed treatment for several months. One of my boxers was almost naked, due to the huge amount of hair he lost.
Please check back often, as other forum members may be able to help you.
I will check back when I can....
Connie
