My 8 year old pomeranian died this Sa.

My dog Bunny was just diagnosed with Cushings July 3, last month.  I took her to the vet ER just in time.  Her breathing was labored and she tilted her head, almost couldn't keep it up.and they gave her IVsand blood tests, cortisol levels extremely high, and I then took her to her vet the next day.  Bunnys  vet took ACTH test and ultrasound and confirmed Cushings with a ACTH test, her cortisol levels were very high.   Her vet prescribed 30 mg Trilostane once per day.  I saw improvement in a couple days.  She was walking and eating.  Another ACTH test was taken in 10 days. her levels went down but not enough yet.  Then brought Bunny back in 30 days for another ACTH test and levels went down a lot.  Her levels were almost normal, Bunny was doing very well with this medicine.  Bunny was scheduled back for ACTH testing in 3 more months.  Just this Sa. I gave Bunny her medicine at 8:00 am and she vomited slightly at 10:30 am.  She then pooped in the house.  Then she laid down for a little.  An hour later she came in the room with me.  She barely walked and wobbled under my bed to lay down.  She keep trying to turn as to get comfortable.  I went to her and she was panting and I say her tongue sticking out and her neck throbbing.  I couldn't get a pulse.  She wasn't moving. I knew she was gone.  I took her to the ER vet to confirm if she died.  She did.  He didn't know why w/o testing.  I took her to be cremated .  I now have her ashes.  I called her vet the next day.  She was in shock too. because Bunny was doing so well.  She couldn't give me any answers.  I just wanted someone to be able to tell me what could she have died from?  I just need to know.  I love her so.  Thank you.  I just have to have some guesses as to why.

So sorry about your Pom.  That is a terrible thing to have happen.

One of the possible causes of Cushings is cancer, either of the adrenal glands or of the pituitary gland.  If Bunny did have cancer, it would have been the cancer that killed her.  You and her doctors successfully treated the symptoms of Cushings, but the cancer that caused the Cushings was still progressing.  Please take satisfaction in knowing that you made her comfortable for her last couple of months of her life.   Also please know that, if she did have cancer, there is nothing you could have done to prevent it.  That type of cancer in dogs cannot be prevented, and it cannot be cured.  You did everything that could be done for her, and you did it lovingly.  You have cause for sadness, but you have no cause for regret.  I wish everyone took care of their dogs like you took care of Bunny.

I don't have any answers for you, but I'm sorry Bunny died.  Cushings is a horrible disease and hard to control, and its so hard to watch your dog live with it.  You may never have an answer, but try to find some comfort in the fact she went on her own and you didn't have to make the decision for her.  She was a lucky dog to have you try so hard for her and love her so much.
