Ask a Vet Forum

I know some posters have been frustrated with the recent one-a-day question limit on the Ask a Vet Forum, so I contacted MedHelp to see if the limit was a technical error.  Cindy Thompson with MedHelp told me that Dr. Cheng is away until December 3, and doesn't have the ability to answer more than 1 question per day at this time.  Once she returns, the forum will be returned to its usual numbers.

Many thanks to Cindy for clarifying the situation, and also to Dr. Cheng who is still trying to help us out even while she must be away.

Jen

Hello. I have a pit mix/mut, he is almost 2 yrs old. Almost every 2-3 months he gets really sick. Starts vomiting, diarrhea, quits eating, shakes, and constantly sneezes and swallows. Our vet has gone round and round with what could be causing this. We have looked at everything from allergies to poisonous plants and regardless of what we do he gets sick again.  The last time was about 3 months ago and he ended up not eating for a week straight. The vet kept him there for 4 days to observe him, then he came home his normal "ADD" self. Now it's 3 months later he's worse than ever before and we're at a complete loss of what to do. The only new symptom is a tumor or growth in his nostril. It is almost completely blocking his right nostril. He has always had a nasal discharge and his eyes run too, I never thought much of it until I found this tumor today. Any suggestions for me and my vet? Please help!

If you are a vegetarian, then you have chosen as a pet an animal who cannot fit your lifestyle and philosophy.  Cats are carnivores (meat eaters) and if they don't get enough meat protein in their diet, they will get sick.  I don't think it was the wormer that made her sick.  It sounds like she is malnourished from lack of meat protein.  A cat cannot live on milk alone.  You're going to have to at least give her fish or chicken to keep her alive.  Are there any commercial foods available where you live in India?

Please, do not wait if you have an urgent question for Dr. Cheng to come back.  If you are concerned, take your pet to the vet.
