Puppy Sometimes Chokes/Wheezes in Sleep

My fiance and I have a 6 month old Goldendoodle.  About once a week or every two weeks for the past month or so we will sometimes be woken up by the sound of him gagging/wheezing/choking.  It always scares me and I think he is choking on something but when I get up to check he is usually just waking up from his sleep.  Does anyone know what this could be?  Could it just be him choking on his on spit or tongue?  Maybe sleep apnea (if dogs can get it) or respiratory problems?

He is a big dreamer.  Wakes me up plenty with his little barks and yips in his sleep hehe.

Occasionally my dog got a "funny turn" like this, but it didn't really mean anything in her case. She is fit and well. I wondered if it was some response to dreaming, or like one of those things I used to get when waking from sleep (similar) -waking catching my breath, but physically well otherwise.
However, I would check this out with the vet to be on the safe side.
