Problem swallowing

My dog has been vomiting, 14yrs old has had liver problem at age 5 but well from then on. Something attacked her liver, bacteria from animal, etc but never determined at that time.

Now, recently started to vomit.  Took dog to vet for that , and said the rabbie shot was due , she had one 3 yrs ago , but don't remember a reaction then.   They gave her a rabbie shot which I would of not had them give her, but had to have my husband take her and didn't say anything.  Next day she would not eat and could not walk on front leg.  Temp 101 before shot 103.5 after shot.  I have read about side effects of the shot, did not have the distemper part of the shot this time.

They started her on pepcid and also antibiotic for teeth and gums, but now after the vaccine, she hasn't had the antibiotic because she will not eat, will nibble with encouragement, but will not swallow the food.  Any suggestions.  Xray of chest and abdomen negative for mass. Labs are normal, will take in Monday for ultrasound of liver and enzymes if she doesn't improve.  Had Cerenia injectable today.  Any suggestions to stimulate the eating.  Thanks

Hi Debbie....Was anything OFF on her bloodwork? Did you get a copy to look at? Anything too high or low? It will be listed on the test.....Ask for a copy for your files....

First, the terrible mouth odor (For months) , not eating, red gums and pawing at her face, still indicates a tooth problem....Other things that cause bad breath are Kidney Disease (This smell is a chemical smell) and digestive problems (Where the smell is actually coming from the stomach). Her mouth smell should be better while on Pepcid if it is stomach related....Have you noticed any difference?
Try this: Wrap a piece of cloth (Like a dish towel or gauze) around your finger....Put your finger in her mouth and rub all her teeth like you are brushing them...Make sure you get the back ones.....Pull it out & smell...Does it smell rotten? Then it's her teeth....Usually blood will be apparent, also...

Now, the reason I inquired about her blood work, is this all sounds alot like a tick borne disease....Although a seperate bloodtest, her labs would show some indication, also....Has this been ruled out? Limping, fever, refusing to eat, etc. fits Tick Disease...Google "Canine Tick Borne Disease" & see if it rings a bell....

What does her posture look like?

Another thing could be a problem with her spine such as a herniated or ruptured disk....That's why I ask about her posture.....If it's in the neck area, the symptoms fit this, too.  It would not be fair, not to add, that a tumor of the spine is possible....Especially in a senior dog...

So, now that I've confused you, think  about some of these things and let me know what you think.....I personally, would try the Deramaxx.... With it's use, you can rule out pain....The harder part will be, where it's coming from.....Keep me posted....Karla

Thank you for your response.  Mandi is a very loving 14 yr old Dalmatian.  I had noticed her breath to be foul for a few months, but she is a dog.  We have always fed her nutritional food and don't feed her table scrapes.  She was eating Natural Balance hard food with no problems, but over the last few months would vomit then go on her way.  She enjoys going on the boat with my husband and I, and loves to go to the mailbox for the paper and go with us anywhere, and wham this week started throwing up frequently. She runs our acre and is still able to run after the squirrels who come to the feeder, but has never managed to out run them to the tree, she then jumps up and down as they scurry up.  Up to that point she always ate 1 cup of dry food in the morning and 1 cup of dry food at night.

I made an appointment for her because of the vomiting and unfortunetly was not able to go.  First, they trimmed her nails and gave her the Rabbie vaccine, which I felt was not a priority.  Her gums were very red and they prescribed her the pepcid for vomiting and Clavamox for her gums and teeth stating that her teeth could be the problem.  Since they felt it was her teeth I purchased Natrual Balance limited soft food since she is accustomed to the Nautural Balance dry food and purchased some pumpkin on the advice from the pet store which they stated helps the digestion.

My husband told the vet this and she said really, I never heard of that.  Mandi has a small cyst on her eye which we have had removed 2 times , but it came back and due to her age the vet where she had it removed felt with her age that because it doesn't bother her not to have her go under anethesia again.

The vet hospital that we took her to for this illness is well known so we returned there because of her past experience with the liver attack when she was 5 which the cause was never determined.  She was outside with us and collapsed, I thought she was dying, we rushed her to ER on the weekend and on the way she was hemmoraging.  When we got there the Vet at the Purdue ER clinic said she had a gastric hemmorage and her labs showed the liver labs in the thousands which were unexplained.  She continued to improve and never had another problem after that. She was on IV's over a week at the clinic again and hasn't been sick since.

Anyway, this vet said to my husband on this visit Ohh, let me look at that ugly thing on her eye like she had never seen a cyst on a dogs eye.  Anyway, we started her on the pepcid and Clavamox and my husband was also given some meds in a box for us to try in a few days, and the box read (Deramaxx).  I hadn't looked at the box yet and it was not explained why she was giving it to us.  The dog was not feeling any better and I didn't want to put anything else in her stomach until she improved.

The next morning I was cleaning up vomit before going to work.  I fed her the soft food in the morning along with her pepcid and antibiotic arrving home from work at 5p no vomit.  I increased her pepcid to BID to see if 2 X's a day would help.  The next morning she had not vomited during the night,  BUT, I checked on her that night every few hours and she had moved from her favorite cushioned bed upstairs to the landing at the bottom of the stairs, maybe because she started running a temp and it was cooler there.  She then moved back to her favorite bed sometime between me checking on her and early morning. I went to coax her out of bed which is very unusual, because she is always ready to go out the door at 6a with my husband to get the paper.  She had not vomited that night either. I tried to pick her up (60 lbs) and she yelped and couldn't put pressure on her front leg, I thought great maybe she fell down the stairs during the night.  I placed a towel around her and coaxed her out as she helped me walk her out on 3 legs, I then got her to the grass and she just collapsed right there and didn't want to get up.  I called the vet right away and took her in.

After getting her into the car which she loves to ride in, she just laid there helpless. When I got her there she got out and stiffed the grass and actually put some pressure on the leg , urinated and had a bm.  When we got in they took her temp and it was 103.5.  I thought about the vaccine and asked the vet if they gave it in her shoulder and she said no she gives rabbies in right hip , I then asked were the labs were drawn and she said left leg.  So I was trying to rule out the shot.  The vet said that the pain could cause the temp and that it wasn't likely the vaccine would do anything.  I told the vet I gave the dog an 81 mg aspirin, and she stated she wished I would of given the Deramaxx that she had given us to try instead.  I stated that I read the box and it was for arthritis something that our dog doesn't appear to have, she gets around great.  She then said when they look at a dog they look at the overall picture and that some people think their dog slows down because of age but it is really from the dog getting arthritis.  I told her I would not give this to my dog because she can run and jump , doesn't limp, jumps on our boat, etc  She told me it was free anyway for us to try.  I told her I felt the 81 mg aspirin would be a better choice for her pain that morning, since I didn't know anything about the Deramaxx.

I took her home and she refused to eat from then on and is still not eating.  The vet said we should get a  chest and abdomen xray when we returned again with her refusing to eat. It showed no mass or obstruction.  They gave her a nausea shot (Cerenia) we then took her home and we have continued to force feed her.  I have tried everything you suggested prior to me inquiring and multiple other things.  We are now taking tablespoons of peanut butter and smearing it in the roof of her mouth.  We returned today with her to the vet.  They looked her teeth over again and scraped her front teeth and removed the tartar, but the back teeth look brown to me, but they stated good news we don't think it is her teeth, and stated they would hold off on the liver ultrasound now because the labs are normal and don't feel it is her liver.  My husband again asked the vet about a reaction to the vaccine and she said she had never heard of it causing dogs not to eat.

They now have prescribed something for appetite  Mitysxspinr 15 mg and want to see her back on Friday.  If you put something in the dogs mouth she chews real big and tries to force it back out, sometimes putting her nose down and tries to use her paws to get it out.  It is so sad.  I hope something starts working.  She has not vomited for a few days, so that is good.  She just lays in her bed, is drinking water and going out to the bathroom and still wags her tail, but just will not eat anything and is very turned off to anything offered to her.  Thanks again for your suggestions.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that something good will happen to her appetite.  Sincerely, Debbie

Hello & welcome....I see some red flags, here......First, your Vet should have NEVER suggested Vaccines when you brought her in for an illness....No ill dog should be vaccinated & a 14yr old is out of the question, period!

Next, you stated - Labs are normal....But, it sounds as if your Vet has now suggested Ultrasound & enzymes....I have a problem here because the Liver Enzymes are listed on the Labs! Were they in normal range or not?

I think what is happening here is that your girl has a dental problem....What did your Vet say about her teeth to indicate giving Antibiotics?

The elevated temp. is normal after the Rabies Vaccine & pain is pretty common, too.
I suspect she has an undetected tooth problem that is causing enough pain that she won't or can't eat....The vaccine has weakened her immune system and made the infection more prominent....

What are you trying to feed her? Hard or soft food? Have you tried to cook some chicken & rice or something like that for her? Can she eat soft food? You might start there and see if you can narrow down a dental problem or not...At least, this might help you rule it out....

If it's a dental infection.....The Antibiotics will make her feel much better in a couple of days, if you can get them in her...Will she eat anything? Like scrambled eggs or peanut butter? Anything that you can get her meds. in.....Cottage cheese or a slice of cheese?

I don't understand the ultrasound if they claim they don't know what her Liver Enzymes are....That doesn't make sense, except more money out of your pocket into theirs, I'm sorry to say......Think about all of this and let me know......Good luck, Karla
