tips for cleaning the goop from my dogs eyes

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has ideas on how to make the process of cleaning the goop from my dogs eyes easier.  Scruffy gets black mucus in the corners of his eyes that dries almost instantly into a hard mess.  Whenever I clean it, I am concerned that I hurt him as it pulls his fur and he seems uncomfortable.  Are there any products out there that make this stuff softer and easier to remove?  I asked the vet about it and she said wet paper towels but that isn't working.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am glad you had success.  I most likely will take my dog to the groomer and let them do it.  My dog is in pretty bad shape.  I think he will need a sedative.

Thank you for the response.  I actually just kept soaking a wash cloth with warm water and as gently as I could I softened it with the wash cloth and just kind of brushed it down.  I'm lucky he's patient because it took a while.

Hello!
My yorkie has the exact same problem.  I am thinking about oiling it down with petroleum jelly or baby oil and then trying to pull it out gently.  My little dog bites so i would have to make sure that he is tired and that it is not painful for him.  I was also thinking about gently trying to remove the hair with a hand held disposable razor a little bit at a time.
I am going to call the groom departments and see what they say, and how they will remove it and the cost.
