When i was taking care of my friends dog i found the exact same problem but dont worry too much the dog is missing its owner and like people when they are depressed he has lost his appetite. All i can advise you to do is try and play with him and show that you care and he might warm up to you and feel more at ease but dont expect him to just start eatin straight away, when he is ready he will eat. Hope this helps
Thanks! I just find it odd. I've pet sit for many people, including a number of neurotic dogs, but this is the only one who won't eat. I play with him every morning when I let him outside for the day and feed him in the morning. He take maybe 2 bites maximum of his food and then walks away and just runs around the backyard. Every other dog will eat within a day or 2, but this dog still isn't eating. Hopefully his food is gone when I go back tonight.
Yeah i completely understand why you would be worried because i was too but some dogs take it worse than others do. The dog i was taking care of didnt even want to play and she was a really playful dog in general but she didnt want to do anything but lay there and i was honestly worried but they come around eventually just leave the food there and when he really wants it he will have it.
I once looked after a firend's dog while they were away for the day. He seemed quite happy for the first hour or so, then he started a watch at my gate for his owners returning. He was missing them like crazy.
I offered him his food -he wouldn't eat it. He'd play, but I could tell his heart really wasn't in it. At 6pm, after a lot of play and walks and distractions I was sure he would eat, as he hadn't eaten a bite all day and he'd been with me since 8am.
I had some freshly cooked chicken water (from cooking meat for my dog) and I poured this "soup" liquid over his dry food just before giving it to him. He did a double-take, and wolfed the lot!
Just a thought, that might tempt your sad dog!
