Hi Ginger......I thought I could help you with my all-time FAVORITE canned food. This food is made in New Zealand (Where rules & regulations for pet food are stricter) and is distributed to many countries.....I went to their homepage, typed in UK......The only thing listed is there is a new distributor in Australia. Nothing else....... :(
Darn, I'm soooo disappointed!! I wanted to help you....Sorry, Karla
I would really like to find a brilliant wholesome canned food in the UK.....
Anyone any ideas....? Come on there have to be some Brits around here.....
I see your in Canada so this answer may not apply...... I live in a tiny town, too & better food is miles from me, also.....
I order canned food, by the case, online and have it shipped to my house.......If you search hard, you can find reasonable shipping....One company I order from, will ship free if you spend $50.....Doesn't matter if it's 5lbs. or 100lbs.....
You might give that some thought.........
Your best bet would be to ask your vet for some homemade dog food recipes if you're determined to not use commercial dog foods. Your dog with the twitchy pancreas definitely needs to be on a very low fat diet - white poultry and rice is always a good choice for a dog who has pancreas trouble.
The biggest problem with not using a quality commerical food is with nutrients. There's not a thing wrong with making your own dog food, but you'll need to add a good multivitamin to ensure your dogs are getting everything they need to be happy and healthy. Dog food is forumlated for dogs; baby food is formulated for human babies, and the nutritional requirements are not identical.
I know there are a lot of horror stories about some commerical dog foods. Like anything else, some are better than others but I wouldn't say that any of them are outright lethal. It wouldn't exactly make the manufacturers any money if their clients ended up sick or dead, right? Any kind of meat processing is a nasty business whether it's intended for humans or animals. It ain't purty watching one life get converted into food for another life, but it's just a part of nature.
Avoid dry food that lists corn (or maize) as the primary ingredient. It's only filler and amounts to doggy junk food. You'll have a skinny dog who is constantly hungry and poops all the time. I finally convinced my neighbor to ditch the Old Roy food he'd been feeding his dog for years and he couldn't believe how much it cut down on poo patrol and how much better his dog looked overall. Talk about junk food!
I have a Dalmatian who needs a special diet. Dals can't metabolize the purines found in beef and because of that they tend to develop bladder stones. We tried the more expensive Blue Dog and Royal Canin brands, but neither one of our dogs cared for them. Go figure! We finally settled on Iams Healthy Naturals with chicken which has worked very well for several years. They get a cup of that in the morning (that they usually don't eat) and I split one of the containers of Purina Beneful wet food and mix it with dry for dinner. My husband swears that he'd eat the Beneful if we had nothing left in the house. LOL!
Iams and Purina products are available in most grocery stores, so if you can find it readily you might want to give those a try before you completely give up on commercial foods.
