how do you get a puppy to walk on a leash?

I know that those who know me say "well, she had a dog before, what did she do then?"  I never trained Tiffany, my father did.  My dad has since passed and I don't know who to ask!  Any advice?  When he is put on a leash, he sits in between my legs, I move, and he comes right back between my legs!  It is just tooo funny...also it is a regular collar and I don't want to pull because of the trachea...should I get one of the harnesses instead????

It takes lots of practice and patience. The first several times I took my puppies out on a leash I was tripping all over them because they were running in and out of my legs, doing flips to try to get away from the leash and trying to chew on the leash. They are much better at it now because they're more used to it and more comfortable with it now.
He'll get it, don't worry. Just give it time. :)

Sounds like he just doesn't have a lot of confidence yet since he's hiding underneath you.  Cute as it is, you don't want to reward that behavior with pets and cuddles or he'll never get over it.  Before you worry about walking properly on a leash, now is a good time to work on name recognition before moving on to other things.  There's a Health Page waaay down on the bottom right of this page about how to do that exercise.  It's a good one for bonding with your pup and getting him to learn to trust you.

Why not look into a training class?  It's really about teaching the humans to communicate with their dogs, and will address all kinds of issues like housetraining in addition to leash training.  Good schools have separate classes for puppies, and 3 to 6 months is a perfect time to start.  Pups learn really quickly at that time.

A simple buckle collar is just fine for your pup.  It should be tight enough that he can't slip his head out by himself, yet still loose enough that it doesn't interfere with breathing and muscle movement.  Ain't living with a new puppy just grand?!  :-D
