Crunches

I have been doing crunches as part or my work out six days a week.  My back can't lay flat so I do it on the bed.  Am I making my back worse?  It's really painful to do them on the floor.  I have less back pain since I've started exercising regularly but when I skip a day my lower back hurts a lot(nerve problems).
