What do you think of preventive photocoagulation of the peripheral retina?

My doctor suggested I should do laser photocoagulation in my left eye  of one part of my peripheral retina- the temporal quarter. Not because I have some holes or tears in there , but because I am severy myopic (-15)and already had a retinal detachment in the temporal area in the right eye. In this way he wants to prevent RD in the left eye. My questions are:
-does such  photocoagulation really can prevent anything?
-is it risky?
-will it in any way affect my vision if it is only temporal? I am not sure how much in the periphery the laser line will be
-do you think it is a good idea if I don't have any tears or holes yet in this area?

I would suggest you get a second opinion from another retina surgeon. The treatment of holes, tears, lattice, retinoschesis and a whole host of retina problems is very controversial. Treating normal retina without any pathology doubly so. I cannot answer your questions over and above this.  If necessary get a 3rd opinion so you understand your options.
