Eye Grapes?

The right side of my face was smashed by trauma in 2004, and it was repaired by surgery that included access to the damaged area up through my mouth and down through my right eye under the lower lid.  Since that time, I have had numerous and troubles including constant irritation from the lid not being able to close entirely, and eyelashes that grow inward against my cornia.  I've had a number of follow up procedures, but the irritation continues.  Recently, there has been a change for the worse.  I had noticed on several occasions a blood colored swelling in the corner, Last week, the eye began bleeding from somewhere inside - it eventually stopped with some pressure.  This morning, I woke up and when I looked in the mirror, I was mortified to find a pea size "grape" (like a blood blister) protruding from that outside corner.  I first tried to lance it, but it proved too elusive to penetrate.  So, I resorted to clasping onto it and pulling.  It came right out, and right behind it was another one!  But when the "cord" between the two broke, the second "grape" recessed back into the corner - perhaps behind the tear duct.

Obviously, my eye is very irritated; my sight is impaired; I have a significant headache, and some dizziness.  Any idea what might be going on?

I guess I must not know what an oculoplastic surgeon is.  I have had 2 plastic surgeries to repair the damage around the eye, and I have had a few procedures done by eye surgeons - also around the eye, but not on the eye itself.  I don't think these guys would call themselves "oculoplastic" surgeons, so I have to ask, what is one, and how might their work benefit me?

Would you sometimes consider Dr. Hagan's suggestion to see an oculoplastic surgeon

Eye MD?

I'm very glad to know that your problem has been successfully resolved by your ophthalmologist.  Sorry we couldn't give you more specific information at this forum--I guess that an examination of your eye and knowledge of your medical history would be needed to do that.  It sounds like the doctor you saw yesterday has given you the information you wanted.  Best wishes.

I got in to see an Opthalmologist/Surgeon this morning.  He performed an amputation procedure to extract the remaining "grapes".  (Obviously, there is a medical term for these cysts, but I cannnot recall what it is - probably couldn't pronounce it anyway.)  The doctor seemed satisfied that everything was removed, but said that recurrance is not out of the question.

The "grapes" were blood filled cysts - not tumors - that had "stalks" (his term).  He cut the stalks and removed the cysts.  Apparently, these are normal tissues that grow in an abnormal way because of irritation from past trauma or perhaps a stitch that may have remained from a previous procedure.

Anyway, despite a mild headache, some soreness and somewhat blurry vision, I should be good to go back to work and go about life normally again today.  Praise the Lord!

Just by way of some feedback, the reason for my contacting you (your site) was to gain information to learn what was going on with my eye.  I don't know that you were much help there.  Nevertheless, I thank you for your responses.

I'm not an eye care professional, either, but I think that it's much more important for you to see a doctor than to go to work.  Please get some medical attention ASAP and keep us posted on your condition.

No, I'm in the US - Vermont.  I put a call into my Doctor, and left a message saying he might be available to talk this morning (Wednesday).  Unfortunately, I have to go to work.

Hi, I am a community leader here not a doctor. I have a lot of experience helping eye patients including myself. Welcome to our community.

Dr. Hagen should answer your question this evening. I hope you feel some relief or reassurance soon.
