preservative in eye drops

Hi the eye drops l take for Glaucoma ( Azarga) have the preservative Benzalkonium Chloride 0.1 mg/ml in them, what if any are the side effect of this preservative and is it just an irritant or could over 5 years of daily use actually do harm to the eye or make eye pressure worse? thanks

That preservative has been around for more than half a century. Doesn't cause eye damage but some people develop a sensitivity causing the eyes to be red and irritated.
