Pinhole vision

Hi l have early stage cataracts, when l look at the words on the eye chart with my right eye they look slightly blurry the smaller the letters the harder to read, but if l look through a pin hole of make the shape of a telecope with my hand and look through it all the words and totally clear and sharp and l can even read the smallest letters at the bottom of the chart , why is that ,, why does looking through a pin hole make my vision better, is it to do with cataracts
