Shimmering vs flashes. Is it different?

Is the shimmering we get months/years after a retinal surgery different from the flashes one would would get because of traction? Thank you!

Most people don't describe "flashes" as being similar to shimmering.   Flashes are very short duration (1-2 seconds) and very bright in intensity.  Shimmering most people use to describe lower level of light from dim to moderate that varies in intensity and can last from minutes to hours.  Flashes are typical of vitreous traction, shimmerings  from damage to retina.
