When I wake up I am seeing patterns & colours + Black dots

When I wake I see different colours and patterns, it varies each time.  For example my brown dog may appear red or green.  My plain white blanket will have a blue pattern. The white tissues Had red and green pattern.   My white walls often have patterns.

Also I often see a ball of moving black dots (spiders/ bubbles) which slowly spreads out.  My doctor thinks I’m crazy and has referred me to a psychiatrist.  I’m quite sane however and only experience this on waking, and at all times am aware it’s not real.

Is there a simple explanation?  Will it go away?

Hello,  I would call and get a full physical exam from your general doctor and then get an appointment for an MD opthalmologist (not optometrist) as a start.   If nothing is found perhaps the opthalmologist can refer you to a neuro opthalmologist.  Important to get the full physical first in my opinion.  Dr. Hagan will probably respond as well shortly.   Now if you get signs of retina detachment, lost vision, millions of black floaters like ink -- that would be an emergency (go to ER)

You do need to get a medical eye exam by an ophthalmologist and include a macular OCT test.  However there are several discussions of this posted in the past. In most cases it is your retina adjusting from dark adaptation (scotopic) to daylight vision (photopic).
