Tripple vision

Both eyes are experiencing the same effect. when I look as a traffic light, any light at a distance of 12 ft or greater I get a equal lateral triangle shape with the three points being the main points of light with lines connecting in-between.
AS I move in the points of light move in as well but never become one. I also know that the left point of light will be the original source with the left point being the second less intense and the center top will be the weaker of the three. a retinal specialist could not offer an explanation. This has been a problem  for 5 months seems to have been a stable situation from the beginning. Any ideas?

Many times this can be caused by astigmatism, have you been diagnosed with this? If i am not wearing my contacts and i look at a stop light i will see many duplicates of the light surrounding the real source, but as soon as i put my contacts in everything is normal. Maybe a refractive problem and not retinal.
