Bottom line: Computers do not cause eye damage or the need for glasses. Over the last 2 decades there has been exponential growth in number of people using computers and other devices with video screens. There has not been a corresponding growth of eye disease or increase in people needing glasses.
Using the eyes on computers can cause some eye fatigure will not damage the eye. Think of it like this if you go for a walk your legs will eventually get tired and you'll want to sit down and take a rest. You know intuitively that walking does not damage the leg, if anything it makes them stronger.

I hope I am wrong. But, the optometrist at Lenscrafters asked how much do I do computer work and I told him I was on the computer for about 4 hours a day but that on my regular PC I use a screen protector that filters the light and he said that was good. I am not sure it if was just for eyestrain or not. He said that at the time (about 7 years ago) my retina looked great and it was probably because I wore sunglasses with UV protection all the time. So maybe I interpreted that the computer wasn't that good for your eyes because they were concerned about how many hours I used it. Also, because my friend at work got bad headaches and vision problems probably due to the setting (frequency) being set too close to the fluorescent lights. Anyway, I am glad if it isn't a problem. I would love to get a kindle. I also get migraines and if the setting is not right on my PC or if there is an add or game that flashes I sometimes get a migraine. Anyway, I am sorry you have retinal problems. My best friend does too. But glad you can work around it.

I think that you are wrong... From previous statements of dr. Hagan and dr. O. working on PC isn't that bad for the eyes, only can get you tired... And as I know, Kindle has a screen that won't strain your eyes, so, I guess, you don't have to worry.
And if you don't have retina problems, you don't have to worry. I have RD on one eye, and had retinal tear on other, and I'm using PC.
Personally, I used Kindle once, and it was a pleasant experience, no eye strain, it was really nice to read from it... So, just go and buy one, and enjoy in reading.
Oh, and about your friend at work, old CRT monitors with bad refreshment rate settings can cause the flickering and are sometimes dangerous, maybe not that dangerous to the eyes, but that kind of flickering can cause epilepsy, so this is probably what you want to avoid.
kind regards
