Multiple vision with one eye

I had monocular diplopia (or multiple vision with my both eyes or ghost images. I think they all mean quite same). I tried everything according to optics and doctors, but even the most scilled doctors could not help me. I tried to see and work as much as I could but at the end I could not pick a phone number in internet site. The situation was really bad. CT-scan and allergy tests and every possible thing was tried.

Because nothing was able to help, I desidet to try all things again. First thing whitc I tried before was try to fix my eyes with plus lenses, plus lenses make eyes more relaxed. I had also some exoforia. I find out that in my case, more prism in my eyeglasses would relax my eyes. In this part I tried to order prism lenses witch were totally wrong direction but fortunately my scilled optician said no, and i desidet to take prism lenses which prism bases were in right direction. I ordered fresnel lenses, which are quite cheap, and I did put over three times more prism in my glasses than any optician rekommended ( 6prd base in was recommended, i tried 22 prd base in). Optician allowed agreed to supply these fresnell lenses after she had tested that my eyes really coudl thake that 22 prism (27 was max) Fresnel lenses did't felt bad, only a bit weird. My after a minute or so, my vision doubled (as expected) but which was remarkable was that both images were sharp! No ghost images or nothin! It was a test and it had worked. Still, nobody can take that much prism in onetime, and keep both eyes working in same time so i started to adjust my eyes with prism lenses.

Now I have bought something like five eyeglassesn in around year and also fresnell lenses to increase prism in my glasses- My eyes could not take more than three prd in time, and it take a few months when i could take more prism, so that I had stil one image with both eyes(even it was full of ghost images). When i reached 13 prd, I started to see all in one with both eyes. Still there was some adjusting to do, and now my eyes with 16 prism, they work well. I think I have a bit too much, so next galsses are with 15 prd.

How this is possible? I don't know and That's why i wrote here. My own idea is that multiple vision can be caused by three things whitch are head injury, disease and overstressing of eyes. In my case I think it was overstressing. All other things were tried and because accomodation and eye movement systems work together, another did give too hard time to another.

I really like to know is somebody had something like me, and what other experts (I think I'm expert with my eyes, because I have studied them now over five years and nobody else coud not solve my eye problem) had to say in this problem which was solved.

It is impossible to comment without an examination.  You need to see an ophthalmologist.

I am not sure about revel's problem, but ophthalmologists don't seem to have the answer for the vertical ghosting (separately in each eye) that a number of people on this forum have. I saw two ophthalmologists and they said they'd never heard of it and couldn't explain it. Others have also had this problem for years or decades, seen multiple doctors and found no answer.

I have seen ophthalmologist two times. In fact, once in year 2006 I did get some good results, wich I did not noticed as I shoud have. "After one hour Marlow the results were -9 Prd for long distance and -15 for near distance". There were much more information, but that information may be irrelevant. Doctor also say in that diagnose that "Monocular diplopia is not caused by astigmatism". I don't know what means "Marlow" and did not undertand doctors diagnose, and maybe thats why this has been so big challenge to get my vision back.

Anyway, in that point in year 2006 I had 3prd+3prd glasses and i bought two fresnel 3prd lenses extra (3+3 in glasses and 3+3 with fresnel, or so I Thought. I put them on and I coudl see. I tried to order glasses with 12 Prd but my optician said that I had put those 3+3 PRD fresnel lenses wrong way so I did not have any prism at all. After that I used contact lenses and completed my university studies, and then happened what I wrote before.

I had so many diagnoses, so I did't paid attention on that diagnose. Other diagnoses which I had weren't even close, and I could't read those papers anyway, before I solved this problem.

Hello All, My Name Is Ahmad And I'm Suffering From This Problem Since 2009, And It Keep Getting worse.
The ophthalmologists I visit have no idea what is this, but as I change doctors A Lot my clothes, I build up a good knowledge of the subject taking some words from one doctor and some from the other.

to mention this at first, i spent the last 3 years searching and looking through the Internet about this problem as well as searching for other medical conditions regarding depression, dizziness, and so on.

and I've found the question asked by Larchy in 2008, and the replies of the people specially Nancy T who I've found to be a good person and try to help who ever she feels need helping.

returning to the subject, I have severe monocular diplopia in my left eye, where i see many(multiple) ghost images above and below the real object and beside it (to the right and to the left) as well but not as severe as the vertical diplopia.
that was my left eye...... my right eye is lazy (ambylopic ) as i have severe astigmatism in it and the brain just cancels the images coming from it... so my left eye was my precious eye to me untill i had this weird thing in 2009.
i also have severe starburst effect at night which you see what is supposed to be asingle dot of light, you see it as lots of dots with arms of light coming out from them.
after walking by alot of doctors, neurologists, psychologists, and ophthalmologists, and being diagnosed with tons of unrelated things which is considered so minor in the eyes of the doctors and consider me a hypochondriac or an exaggerator.

I diagnosed my self based on their talks altogether, as every one individually has given me nothing to rely on.

first of all, the problem seems to be worse in dim light conditions, and when you are tired or in conditions when you lack some sleep, and that has a simple explanation..... in theses situation, your pupil seems to be larger than normal, and large pupil amplify any problem might be there in your eye, it is the exact opposite of pinhole experiment which you reduce the area of your cornea that takes in light, and there is another reason why it doesnt happen in the day, or at least it will be so faint or small to be noticed.
secondly, there must be something wrong with our corneas... after some research, you can find that this problem is found in the people who undergoes refractive surgery, as the flap divides the cornea into two places, and when your pupil is dilated an exceed the limit of the flap, you will see ghosting, starbusrsts and blur.

for the people who never goes under lasik, PRK, or any other refractive surgery, then they have something called HOA higher order aberrations and that suppose to be discovered by a corneal topography or pentacam but in some cases as mine, they cant see it.
thye HOA could be normal and mild, or it can be a result of a corneal dystrophy which i suspect myself to have.

search corneal dystrophy and lasik disasters and see if it can help you, and i am happy to be contacted if any one needs in anything or if someone reaches a rigid solution...

Thanks Alot.

Ahmad.

That is very interesting, Ahmad; thanks for posting.

I do have vertical ghosting, in each eye separately, but unlike with many people, mine occurs only when I am (1) reading while looking down; and/or (2) very fatigued.

The idea of higher-order aberrations, which I looked up, is interesting, but I don't understand how the ghosting would only be triggered by those two conditions. What would fatigue have to do with corneal topography? That is a mystery to me.

There's a very clear correlation for me between the onset of the ghosting and fatigue (general fatigue, i.e., lack of sleep, and/or presumed eye fatigue from a couple of minutes of fast reading while looking down).

Good luck to you as continue your research. I hope you find an answer for your "good" eye.

Nancy T.

I have these symptoms too. When reading something or focus on something my ghosting gets worse even I think it is worse day after day. Even I see starbursts on reflects of the sun or lights. No answers yet.

Now I have 14,5 prism (base in) glasses. I have had these for three months. No more one eye diplopia with both eyes, ghost images or nothing. I did get work as an electrical engineer and life is smiling. I hope I can someday help somebody with this kind of problem.

Ahmad, thank you for your posting. I know it has been awhile sense you last posted but how are things now.
I have also seen several ophthalmologists who have had absolutely no idea why I am experiencing vertical ghosting. I also have prism glasses although they do not help with the issue. I have been told that there should be no reason why I see ghosting as my glasses are a very low prescription and my topography exam came back normal.
