I had countless eye exams over the past three year for cataracts, and also for potential laser eye surgery. None of these exams have caused eye pain or inflammation. If you have a cataract it would be a good idea to do as suggested and have a consultation with a cataract surgeon. They will be able to give you a recommendation on when it would be appropriate to proceed with the cataract surgery. Be aware that when it comes time to take the measurements for the IOL power calculation you will have to discontinue wearing your contacts for a period of time. For hard contacts I believe it is 4-6 weeks.

I would suggest you call the ophthalmologist and report your symptoms. They are atypical of symptoms following an eye exam.  If waiting for cataract surgery will increase the risk, as your post suggests, you might want to move forward or get a 2nd opinion
