i see. the 1 in 3000 chance you talking about is lifetime risk right. so my chance of getting RD in my lifetime is still well remain below 1%? I am quite an active person and i play frisbee and badminton a lot, almost everyday. Since i am wearing spectacles anyway, is my glasses sufficient to protect my eye? thank you so much for replying.
No there is something you can do. To repeat: See an ophthalmologist yearly. Don't do amusement rides that whip and jerk the head, wear eye protection for contact sports and eye injury activities (weed-eater, power tools). Symptoms of possible RD sudden onset of flashes of light light lightening in eye, many new floaters especially if like soot and loss of peripheral vision. Lead a healthy lifestyle
i see. If so there is nothing i can do right? i am scared that i might lose my vision or even get blind when i get older just because of my high muopia, especially during my working age. It would be a disaster. So much scary informations i get from different sources.
No only partial credit. Rhegmatogenous RD begin with hole Non-Rhegmatogenous not cause by hole. Holes or tears often do not exist prior to the exact moment the retina detaches (due usually to vitreous shifting (PVD) and tearing the retina)
ohh okay. But retinal detachment due to high myopia usually starts with retinal hole or tear right? if so a routine opthalmologust assessment will be able to detect and thus give early treatment am i right? thank you
That is too far out the theoretical limb to answer. Be happy your risks are much lower than you thought. Move on.
I see. I consult an ophthalmologist 3 months ago and he did not say anything bad about my retina so i assume it is fine for now. Even when retinal detachment really happens and I seek professional help immediately, usually it will not cause significant visual lost am i right?
No that's totally wrong. The web is full of false and fraudulent websites. Especially be wary of those selling something.
The risk of a RD in the general, non-high myopic, non-elevated risk factor and not having previous major trauma or cataract/IOL surgery is about one in 5,000 to 7,000. With your degree of myopia assuming your eye has been checked by a eye MD ophthalmologist and not found extensive lattice degeneration or holes/tears of retina your risk might be on the order of one in 3000.
