There are different types of canes available to aide those who are visually impaired, as well as different methods of use. For example for those who just need a simple way to let others know that they are visually impaired their are smaller telescoping id canes. For those who need to travel safely and where an id cane is inappropriate a traditional rigid white cane or a folding white cane with a red tip is used. These two types of canes are extremely light weight and should NOT be used to support your weight, if something like that is required than there is a special cane that can be used for that purpose and will also designate to others that you are visually impaired.

Some people, even if they are legally blind can navigate the world without the use of a white cane or any sort of guide. Others make use of a cane. The choice is up to the individual and how well they can go about doing the necessary daily activities in a safe and effective manner.

If you live in the U.S. and are having trouble with orientation and mobility contact your local commission or services for the blind. They have trained specialists who will help you in determining what sort of aides you need as well as offer you training in how to use the aides. This is very important, because you can easily purchase a white cane yourself, however, without the proper knowledge and training of how to use the device, you're more likely to cause yourself and others harm. Also, the training period may take time and you must be motivated and patient in order to succeed.

Only if they find it helpful. Most will be able to get around without them
