starting metformin tonight...

E33
Hi All,

Jeez... todays is one of those days that feels like this fertility stuff will never end.  Anyhow, I know many of you are taking metformin.... I start tonight taking 1 pill with dinner (and then increasing every week). I was wondering if metformin alone helped anyone resume ovulation?? Diva_Lorri, I think I remember you posting that you ovulated... did you use opk?  Someone told me that it will be easier to lose weight once im on this medication.. is that true as well?

Thanks...
xo

i think you just have to be motivated or you loose hope. i also cover it well, alot of times i want to break down and cry but i dont let myself and i should occasionally i suppose. i dont think anyone knows, even my dh or my shrink, how much this has truly affected me. i totally get you with the everyone is pregnant but me thing.... i have a baby shower on sunday, funfunfun for me. my friend deserves all happiness as shes a beautiful person but it doesnt make it any easier. it just hurts as she was married after me and conceived a mere 3 weeks after going off the pill, shes fat like me and she thinks she has all the advice in the world for me on ttc. her heart is made of gold though so i keep my thoughts to myself.
chat soon - xx

Hi ladies,
Thanks for your input and most importantly for the honest advice.  Its definitely reassuring that it restored menstruation for you guys.... at this point ill take any step in the right direction.
I truly admire your optimism Lorri... Im having a tough time these days.  Im having one of those "every time the phone rings someone else is pregnant but not me" kind of months.  How do you ladies stay motivated...?

I started Metformin 500 mg a month ago. It was used to bring my period on, which I NEVER get unless I use some sort of B.C. pill. The first couple weeks, I was so nauseous, and had the upset stomach horrible! I gradually lost my appetite, and therefore have lost some weight, which is another reason Metformin is given. It's really a diabetic medication as well, so make sure to check your sugar occasionally, like if you get the shakes or something. After a few weeks, and increasing to 3 times a day, it finally bought on my period, and it was only for about 5 days, and the cramping wasn't as bad either. I'm using it for PCOS, and am combining it with Clomid, to increase ovulation. I hope it all works out....

hi - yeah im on 2nd month on metformin 500mg x2 daily (ive just increased to 3x daily)
i did opk's and got +'s (1st time in AGES!!!!) on day 17/18. i had my day21 progesterone bloodtests and they came back positive for ovulation. im on month 2 atm (cd 15) and have had some white cm today so I may ov again i hope. im waiting for my opk's to arrive in the mail so i can start testing. i havent done bbt this month though - im still trying to figure out how to do bbt properly.
this year even before taking metformin my periods have semi regulated (i get them at least every calander month usually 20-36days apart) the last few have been 30day cycles.
i used to have a period every 3or so months and it would last for a month but i had laprascopic gastric banding in 2006 and have since then struggled, but lost 35kgs thereabouts i think this has helped. alot more to loose still and hopefully met will help...
i definately have noticed met gives me nausea and diarroeah but not every day. it comes on quite quick but it does subside after a few weeks. its when you miss a day that it makes you sick again. on that note i also feel nauseaus alot anyway because I do not eat much.
its great to hear some ladies have gotten pregnant on met, it gives us hope. sorry to those who had lost there little bundles for whatever reason. a phsycic told me I would be pregnant in two months and this month is the 2nd month since then so Im hoping this is it (hoping so - she was right about a few other things.)
all the best - lorri keep me posted!

I have been on metformin for a little over a year. Before starting it my cycles were like 1 ever 3 months...now my average cycle lengths are 28 -34 days, so that's a lot better. I have lot around 40 something pounds. But anyway it did help me. I also got pregnant a month after taking it, but it ended in a MC....The Dr. said that it was a spontaneous ovulation since I went like 3 months without AF. Hope this was helpful..

Thank you for your feedback ladies.  My sister took metformin for a bit and said it made her go to the bathroom a lot (i know, tmi) but I haven't felt anything tonight.  hmm. we'll see.  Any kind of success stories help these days... xo

I started metformin this past august (i had not had a period since i went off birth control- over 8 months) and i ovulated and got pregnant one month later!!!  i have not had many side effects from the medication and it has not made me lose weight (but i didn't need to lose weight).  I hope it works as well for you!!
