Ovulation/weight/clomid/ahh!

I recently had an ovarian cyst- It was huge, and burst.  When I asked my Dr why I got one, he said it was b/c I was not ovulating.  When I asked why i was not ovulating, he said b/c i was overweight.  (This is without any tests at all)  Later on, i was asking about why i was in so much pain, and he said "b/c you are ovulating."  I am very confused.  I have tried talking to him about finding out if I was not ovulating, and he is blowing me off.  So I have set up an appointment on the 4th for a different dr.  I have looked all over the internet, and read so many books and i cannot find anything that states that weight causes ovulation to stop. I know that being overweight is a very bad thing and i have used this to help me start a lifestyle change.  I have lost 8lbs in four weeks.  I am very upset b/c to become a mother is the only thing i have EVER wanted.  My husband and I had planned to start trying to concieve at the end of  the year, which gives me time to straighten things out. I am so scared that 1. I am not able to conceieve b/c of not ovukating and 2. If i am not actually ttc right now, that no Dr will take interest in my situation.  As far as tracking my ovulation,  I have waited three cycles and have used ovulation tests to see if i was ovulating.  I am not.  I am freaking out and dont know what to do or think.  I have read that clomid helps with ovulation and is a very successful drug, but I am not ttc for a few months.  Any insight?

I have not started monitoring the bbt.  I did go buy one with your suggestion.  Im stressing out over something that may not be, so I have decided to wait until i have my appointment with the new DR on Tuesday.

Thanks so much!

I had a cyst once that burst  (SOOO painful!) and I do not have pcos. There are different kinds of cysts, and they told me the type of cysts that burst are not usually the same type associated with pcos. That's good that you are going to a new MD to get evaluated.

Have you started monitoring your bbt to test for ovulation? That is the best way to find out for sure if you are ovulating or not. It is very easy to do, and the thermometer only costs about $10. When I started going to an RE he wanted 3 months of temp charts before making any diagnosis. I could never get the ovulation test sticks to work for me and could never figure out when I was ov'ing. The sticks are very sensitive to the time of day you do it and also how much fluids you have been drinking. Temp charts showed that I do ovulate around day 18. If you are ovulating you will see a clear rise in temps in the 2nd half of your cycle. Later I switched to a clearblue easy fertility monitor, and that has always worked, showing ov that coincided with my temp charts. The fertility monitor is expensive, but for me it has been worth it. Good luck!!

I have not recently gained weight I have been heavy my whole life.  I am trying to change that now, but as far as the signs of PCOS.... I have not recently gained weight and i have a regular period.  I did have cysts for two months and then they stopped,  So I am crossing my fingers that it's not PCOS.  I am really hoping that its weight and that i can take care of that.
Now, would your dr put you on something if you were not ttc?  I want my ovulation to "come back"  but my husband and i are not ttc until the end of the year.  I almost am thinking if I am going to have problems, then we should just start now. ugh.

Thanks for responding

I have PCOS and i dont ovulate on my own i have to take clomid and provera to jump start my period. i went a whole year with out one. i am ttc i went to a fertility specialist and he did a bunch of test to tell me i had PCOS..  weight gain, no period, cyst's on your ovary's those are some signs that you have PCOS. you should find a new doctor that knows what they are talking about and get tested for it because it can also cause you to become a diabetic.  you can look it up it will tell you more.. i hope i helped a little.. GOOD LUCK...

2ww means 2 week wait after ovulation. I have Pcos and have never ovulated, but that was the cause of my weight gain, due to the hormone balances are out of whack. My re did say to lose weight before i was allowed to TTC due to the fact she didn'tt want me to be over overweight after having another child. . but good luck i would definatley try to lose weight and get checked out.

Thanks for responding.  No i do not know if i have PCOS.  What are symptoms? I have a ways to go to loose 10%.  I am trying though!  I am hoping that weight IS the problem and something i can fix.  I also heard something about taking Vit B Complex like 50 to 100mg.  And i went to the pharmacy and was really overwhelmed by the choices.  I read that you can take a prenatal vit too, but everyone of them i found had only about 12mg of vit B. I decided to wait to see my OB on the 4th and see what she says.  Fertility specialist.  I am thinking i am going to wait until i get an official "you are NOT ovulating"  b/c the only official statement i have gotten is from my 1st OB who looked at me sitting across the room....and diagnosed. (although, the ovulation test did say no on day 14)   Do you agree?  Is a fertility spec something i should consider now, even if i am not ttc yet?

I saw your profile....what does 2ww mean? I will say a special prayer for your test on may 3rd!  My sister in law has PCOS and is waiting on her first test on the 2nd.  She just went through insemination for the 1st time after months and months of shots.  Good luck and again, thanks for responding.  I feel like there is no one really to talk to about this all b/c my husband just says dont think about it until it is an issue, and its impossible for me not to think about it... Its all i ever wanted.  And my family freaks out over everything and it will make everything worse.  anywho... thanks.

I don't know how your doctor can determine with such certainty that your lack of ovulation is due to your weight, but he is correct in saying that being overweight (or underweight) can mess with your ovulation. If you have PCOS (do you know if you do?), then research shows that losing as little as 10% of your weight MAY restore ovulation. I am "normal" weight myself, and I have never ovulated (naturally) in my life, so that is definitely not a factor in every case. Is it a fertility specialist that you've been talking to? If not, I would recommend going to a fertility clinic, since those guys are specialists in those kind of issues. Best of luck!
