Pregnancy

Hi
I'm just enquiring if 40 years of age is too late to start trying to get pregnant?

There are so many women on the pregnancy 35+ forum who are pregnant or have been pregnant at age 40 and above.  I got pregnant at 44 via donor eggs and gave birth to a healthy baby boy in April '08 so it can be done.

If you have no fertility issues, you should be fine however I must also say that there are a few more obstacles to overcome when getting pregnant in the 40's - fertility drops fairly significantly at age 40 and then at 42 largely because of egg quality.  So the sooner you can get pregnant, the better!  This being said, I personally know of two women who got pregnant naturally & accidentally:  my sister who wasn't even trying got pregnant at 40 and my fertility specialist (re) also got pregnant at 43 - also an accident but a happy one.

Once I conceived, my pregnancy went very smooth.  There are more risks involved w/pregnancy at  age 40 but it can also be very good - you get additional care is all.  Actually even though I was 44 at the time of my pregnancy, my ob treated me just like any other pregnant woman which was very reassuring.  I didn't even have to see a perinatologist (expert in high-risk pregnancy).

Best of luck to you - one more thing - if you don't get pregnant within three months, consult a re - he/she can give you some more help.  You can also help yourself by charting your cycle & using OPK's (ovulation predictor kits) to help things along - jen
