Regd IVF to Lvn

HI Lvn,

Warm Welcome  to you. Its really nice to have an embryologist directly linked to this group. I had already written about IVF procedure my sis has undergone. She had 2 embryos planted on March 17th and April 2nd she was asked to come for preg.test and on 11th day she had severe bleeding (similar to periods) which lasted for 3 days. Now fearing her in-laws she didnt want to visit Dr. She is in progestrone(thru vagina)  200mg for 3 times a day. I know the below questions are too long and as a single I dont know how to put these in clear statements . Please help to clarify this.

1) She assumes that "if one embryo fails, other embryo will help to conceive"
Is it true that even after getting period, the other embryo will still develop ?

2) As there may be other eggs in the ovary apart from ET, can this be possible that  those eggs wud have resulted in periods but the transferred embryo is safe ?

3) If one embryo fails to implant does it have effect on other embryo ?

4) If the bleeding has occured for more than a day, what is the status of the embryos?

Please help to answer these and help me to get a clear idea of wat is IVF and happening inside my sis.
She tried IUI too which failed.
Please help
Thank you

Hello.  I will absolutely try and help you as much as possible, but she really will need to go see the doctor eventually.  There is a lot she needs to know about what is going on in her body which is imposibble to know without getting some blood work done.

Her first statement about if one fails the other will help is not true.  The two embryos are more or less independent of eachother.  If she really all out got her period, then the chances she is pregnant are very slim. The menstruation is the uterine lining being completely shed.  So if that is what happened, she may have lost both of the embryos, and in that case, she probably was not pregnant in the first place.  It is possible to miscarry one of the embryos after implantation and not the other, but without knowing how much she bled it is impossible to say.

Ok, so when the shot of HCG is given it helps final maturation of the follicles and then the doctor goes in before ovulation and removes those eggs.  Most likely any of the small follicles that may have been missed at the retrieval are very immature and the chances that those eggs ovulated and she got pregnant from that are also slim.  Most likely she would not have had intercourse at the proper time for these eggs to fertilzie because she has just had a retrieval, and her hormones were not proper at that point to conceive natrually.

If one embryo failed to implant you never would have seen a "period".  The embryo is so small it can only be seen under a microscope.  But if one fails to implant it would not have affected implantation of the other embryo.

As far as what is the status of the embryos, again, it is impossible to know without a blood test.  If she calls her doctor and just talks about what she experienced they will have more insight for her as they know her medical history.  I am sorry she is so afraid of her in-laws, but can you take her to the doctor without them knowing?

I know i have probably not helped much but without knowing her blood levels and her background, there's no definititve answer.

Your comments were really valuable and I did get a clear picture of what you had stated.I took her to Dr today and after Urine Preg.test and Beta Blood test Dr confirmed she is not pregnannt and also stated that further IVF may not help her to conceive either.Thank you Lvn for responding to my mail.

Sorry to hear about the bad news.  After her treatment, do you have any idea why the RE is so sure she will not conceive with IVF?
