Both should be covered by your health insurance. An HSG sends dye up your uterus through your tubes while looking at them by x-ray, and tells (from the inside) if the tubes are clear. Laparoscopy looks at the outside of your uterus and tubes with a camera from inside your abdominal skin. It depends on what they are looking for, I guess. I had an MRI of my uterus done, but that is because my problem was scar tissue in the uterus that didn't show up on ultrasound. (If my problem had been a blocked tube, an MRI of the uterus wouldn't have been too useful.) Which procedure is most helpful depends on what they think is wrong. In my case, everything except the uterine MRI was covered by insurance, and that cost $1,300.
An HSG is much less invasive than a laporoscopy, so most women have that one first, and then depending on the results, maybe a laporoscopy later on. The HSG is over in just a few minutes and is done while you're fully awake (you can watch the dye on the screen as they do the test), while the laporoscopy is more of an outpatient surgery, where you're under full anesthesia and the doctor makes two or more incisions in your abdomen to look at the reproductive tract with a camera (like AnnieBrooke said above). Good luck to you and welcome to the forum!
Thanks girls for the replys.
More bad news...... My OB told me yesterday that my FSH levels are high. ( It was a 9.4 on Day 2 of my cycle - the lab range was 4-13) :(
Booked an appt for HSG on the 9th (8CD). Keeping my fingers crossed.
