how do I know metformin is working?

I have been on metformim 2000mg for just over a month but I have never had regular periods. How do I know if it is working. Me and my partner have been ttc for about 6 months.

My doctor has only put me on it for 3 months and she said if im not pregnant in 3 months she would refer me to a gyno. Is that a bit ambitious?
