Triggering agents/factors for CFS: While early studies of CFS sought to identify a single agent that caused the illness, most researchers now appear to agree that CFS can be “triggered” by a number of different insults including microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, etc.), environmental exposures and severe injuries (such as closed head trauma). At this conference, researchers reported data on a number of agents that set off a CFS-like illness. Here is a list of the agents explored by researchers who gave presentations:

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), CMV and HHV-6 (Barbara Cameron, PhD, University of New South Wales, Australia)

Remember Garth Nicolson, Ph.D. who was recently here in the fibro/CFS forum answering our questions ? Well he will be in Reno, Nevada... and here are the presentations he will be giving !

03/24/09. Prof. Garth Nicolson will deliver three presentations at the International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Conference in Reno, Nevada.

Dr. Nicolson's presentations are titled: (1) “Similarities of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders: Comparison of Blood Co-Infections”

(2) CFS Patients Subsequently Diagnosed with Lyme Disease Borrelia burgdorferi: Evidence for Mycoplasma species Co-Infections

and

(3) Effects of a Dietary Weight Loss Supplement on Fatigue, Appetite Suppression and Weight Loss: Implications for CFS patients.

I'm unable to attend, but I would love to go ! I will let everyone know what new findings are presented at the conference. Just a guess but I think they chose Nevada for the conference location because of the new Whittemore Peterson Institute research center there. Also... Red Labs USA is there as well (they apparently can diagnose CFS or fibro on spinal fluid)
