It sounds like your doctor is seeing a doctor as he has a diagnosis of a Hietal Hernia and has been prescribed medication. One of the results of a Hiatal Hernia is that a valve, called the LES valve, can't close completely because the bottom of the Esophagus is mis-shaped. This allows stomach acid and certainly allows the odors of the digestive system to come back up. I had this problem and it was eliminated with a surgical procedure that allowed the valve to close properly.
I have my teeth cleaned twice yearly, so when offensive breath odor became evident I was mortified, but other symptoms quickly led to the LES valve, the barn door wasn't closing!
One symptom of a faulty LES, other than a foul breath, is a problem with speech, as the vocal chords can burn. Also, teeth can suddenly darken, a result of acid reflux.
Hope this helps, but as Selma advises, I'd suggest you put 4 x 4" posts under your bed rails so he sleeps at a bit of an angle.
Thanks for posting. Keep us informed.
Hi, I would look at his diet and lifestyle as they can play a roll...s diet high in sugars and alcohol can add to this issue.
And if sulfur burps are accompanied with diarrhea and nausea, this could indicate an infection and he should see his doctor.
As I said take a close look at his diet, meds alone will not take care of it if he continues to eat what triggers the GERD issues this can continue to get worse...
He should see His Dr ....how long has he been on the meds?
