I think it's all related. Everything I read above is stuff I've experienced for many, many years, including PTSD.
I had to look for information about Carafate. If you have ever had kidney disease or diabetes, you might not want to even consider this one. If not, I did see, too, that it is something that isn't taken long-term. I saw, though, that this medication does have its own share of sulfites.
Watch sulphur foods actually. Sulfites occur some in nature. So, this is a second reason why you need to steer clear of all alcohol. Grapes themselves have a natural occurring sulfite in them. Do a little bit of reseach on this and you'll see what I mean. Some people are more sensitive than others, but it is something you need to be aware of. Sulfites make my GERD a whole lot worse.
I 've learned that anytime that you experince stress the acid in your stomach changes and hurts you. Also, spicey foods and alcohol. It will make you feel you drank fire. Drinking the juice from boiled cabbage with a bit of salt helped me. But I had to take previcid for years daily but now only when i need it. But liquid carafete can help heal the erosions. Good luck. An thank you for your service.

I am a military veteran too, and I have had GERD for a long time. I take Prilosec, 20-mg, and I am free of pain. I assume you use the VA Hospital as your Primary Health Provider. I get excellent medical care at the VA Medical Center, Houston, Texas. I attribute the VA for saving my life on two occassions. Since you do research on your medical condition, I can give to you a governmemt website that lists digestive disorders from A to Z. You can learn more about GERD, and similar digestive disorders that might interfere with GERD. Go to http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov, and click on the Digestion link that carries you to the listings of disorders.
