I have suffered from GERD for many years. The symptoms can be a nawing pain in the stomach, to a servere painful attack that can feel like a heart attack or somone is punching your stomach between the ribs. Its a really painful experience..you sweat, your heart is racing, and its pretty darn scary. I do take Previcid which works right away for me. What has been helping me alot is when I feel an attack coming on I grab a cold gingerale and drink quick or slow. Whatever helps, and a burp will come which closes that flap somehow and wow what a relief. Water can sometimes do the same thing. If you drink tea or coffee, it will aggrvate it, so with every cup of coffee, drink a glass of water. Do not eat those rolaids, as it will create more acids to build up. I threw those away. I also take a product called Ibergast that I get at any pharmacy to coat my tummy, and it allows for normal bowel movements for IBS w diarrhea is another one of my issues. I can say, both are getting better today.

When you have an acid reflux attack, that acid comes into your esophagus burning the tissue. When this happens enough, it can cause a pre cancerous condition known as Barrett's Esophagus. Barrett's is treatable but it takes an aggressive treatment for a long time under the careful eye of your physician. It is not treated or cured by only taking medications prescribed for GERD....
Any condition left untreated can cause more issues that all together can lead to a death, but acid reflux on it's own I am not sure u can say will cause death.
So, with a long term case of reflux that is really bad....it could lead to a life threatening illness.
I hope her dr has her on meds to help heal the damage being done by the acids.
